Should Kyle Larson get a waiver? This has been the burning question in the NASCAR community ever since the Coca-Cola 600 was called off because of the weather. Larson failed to get even a single lap in the car, while participation in all Cup Series races is a prerequisite for playoffs eligibility.
Some are in favor of NASCAR denying Larson a waiver, also provided for by the rules in certain cases, while others believe he should be granted one. As for Dale Earnhardt Jr., the driver recently shared his thoughts on the matter.
Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast Dale Jr. Download, Earnhardt Jr. discussed whether Kyle Larson should get a waiver due to his absence from the race being a result of circumstances out of his control, or if he is to blame for his delayed arrival at the track before bad weather led to the race being declared over.
Junior noted the "pretty firm stance" that journalist Jordan Bianchi took on the podcast The Teardown against Larson getting a waiver as he himself described why the Hendrick Motorsports driver should get a waiver.
"I can understand a lot of his (Jordan Bianchi's) points about that, but for me, I feel like NASCAR has been so loose with these waivers at this point, I never doubted him not getting a waiver ... I thought he'd get one," Earnhardt Jr. said.
Bianchi had claimed Larson shouldn't be getting a waiver because it would set a wrong precedent. He explained that in this situation a choice was made by Kyle Larson, and going to the Indy 500 before the Coke 600 on the same day had its risks.
Bianchi reasoned that Larson, the points leader and the star attraction of NASCAR, skipped a marquee Crown Jewel race that was going to award more points than any other in the regular season.
"I don't like it," Bianchi had added.
NASCAR's Elton Sawyer gives an update on Kyle Larson's waiver
Elton Sawyer, the Vice President of competition at NASCAR recently revealed the status of Kyle Larson's waiver on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Sawyer claimed that a request for a waiver hasn't come through and there's "really not a lot" to be said at this point about the topic.
"We’ll let the process take its course. I’m sure, at some point, they will send in that request, and when they do, we’ll go through, do our due diligence, meet with our people. This will be a decision that not just one person will make, but a group will sit and look at it and discuss it and move forward," Sawyer explained.
He did mention, however, that considering Kyle Larson has missed the race, the situation for NASCAR is somewhat in "uncharted waters" because in the past, waivers have been given mostly because of a medical reason.
Sawyer claimed that this situation is "a little bit different" and even though they've had some initial discussions, they're yet to formalize a decision on whether Kyle Larson should be given a waiver for missing the Coca-Cola 600 or not.
