During a conversation with Dale Earnhardt Jr. on his podcast show 'Dale Jr. Download', former NASCAR crew chief Travis Carter shared a couple of insights on the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Carter was someone who tasted success at quite a young age in NASCAR. He infamously won the 1975 Daytona 500 with Benny Parsons when he was only 23. He would later go on to work with many legendary NASCAR drivers like Bobby Allison and Junior Johnson.

By the time Carter became an established figure in the sport, an up-and-coming Dale Earnhardt was getting the taste of NASCAR racing at the highest level. When Earnhardt Jr. asked his guest whether he knew of his father before, Carter said:

"He was a contender but I remember it was after the round, August race in Talladega, I remember he called me and he talked about me coming to work there. So we went there and he had the black Trans-Am he ran there, drove like a maniac. We'd go play golf two or three times. You tell somebody, a fish out of water, trying to play golf ... it was pitiful. I spent time with him and enjoyed that."

This prompted Dale Earnhardt Jr. to wonder if his father was a terrible golfer, to which Carter immediately replied:

"We both were."

Following this, the former crew chief recalled that Dale Sr. invited Carter to work with him when he moved to Richard Childress Racing. But Carter wanted to have his own team and be his own boss, so he passed on that opportunity. He claimed he believed at the time that he wouldn't have been able to give the Earnhardt-Childress duo what they needed.

But passing up on that opportunity was something Carter confessed was "a bad choice" considering where the iconic Earnhardt-Childress went in the following years.

Nevertheless, he told Dale Jr. that he had "a great respect" for his father and always considered the 7x Cup champion a friend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals his relationship with playing Golf

During an episode of his podcast show last year, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was also asked by a fan about his golf skills. He replied that while he doesn't play golf, he still boasts a big collection of golf clubs.

I have got a simulator at home and I play on, I swing on that every once in a while. Not often but I still get out there and swing around at the simulator a little bit. I had a lot of fun with that when we first got it years ago, it’s been in my house for a while. I’ve been tempted though man," he described.

Dale Jr. claimed that he was in conversation with Steve Letarte and Rick Allen about going to play golf with them. But at that time, he couldn't put it in his schedule.

He added that he wouldn't prefer to try his hand at golf at a place that is busy with people. He said that knowing he isn't good at it, going to a golf course with a lot of people watching wasn't something he wanted.
