Apart from being a NASCAR Hall of Famer, team owner, philanthropist, and podcaster, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is also an avid gamer. The North Carolina-based racer recently spoke about what he hates while playing the World War II era-based first-person shooter video game "Hell Let Loose" during a recent episode of Dale Jr Download.
Son of the legendary NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jr. followed in his father's footsteps in racing. After competing in the Xfinity Series for a couple of years, the third-generation racer progressed to the Cup Series in 1999. Earnhardt Jr. won 50 races in his career, 24 in the Xfinity Series and 26 in the Cup Series. After spending about two decades in the national series, the #88 driver retired from the sport in 2017.
Earnhardt Jr. then spent some time as a NASCAR presenter for NBC. He also invested in a few business ventures like Dirty Mo Media, a content company. Apart from hosting podcasts, Earnhardt Jr. also spends time playing video games with his friends and colleagues.
The NASCAR race winner spoke about what he hates while playing the first-person shooter game Hell Let Loose.
"Hell Let Loose is a first-person shooter, World War II era, and we played sometimes, TJ. But I like automatic riflemen. I don't know why I feel like that gives me an edge, but it probably doesn't. A lot of people go straight toward the objective. I kind of like to go away. I'm a flanker. I'm flanking. I'm like acres away," Earnhardt Jr. said (0:06 onwards).
"The commander comes over. Junior, what are you doing way over there? Because they can see where your guys are. Yeah, the commander's cussing at you. What are you doing down there? And then when you meet somebody, you're like, I caught the flankers down here. What do you think I'm doing? Down here catching the other flankers. Don't tell me how to play. Oh man, I hate that," he added (0:40 onwards).
"There’s some realism" - Dale Earnhardt Jr. supports iRacing, NASCAR's official simulation partner
Much like Sony's Gran Turismo, iRacing is considered by many as one of the more accurate sim racing games. The online multiplayer game has received support from NASCAR star driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.
iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations, developers of the above-mentioned new-age simulation racing game, have secured the rights from Motorsport Games to create a NASCAR-based game for every console. The collaboration between NASCAR and iRacing has been attracting a substantial number of daily participants. The game is also NASCAR's “official simulation partner”.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared his support and enthusiasm for the online racing game in NASCAR's official press release.
"I have been in a conversation with the iRacing about their vision, and it’s absolutely what you’d expect. There’s some realism. So the console side of it has to appeal to a very general wide audience. So, I think that they are going to nail the target,” Earnhardt Jr. commented.
For budding racers, iRacing is not a mere video game. It is also a tool to hone their skills from the safety of their homes. William Byron, one of the most successful NASCAR racers in recent years, credited iRacing following his first road course Cup win last year.
