Former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently shared his excitement over a picture of Hall of Famer Mark Martin’s 1984 Late Model car.
Martin started racing in NASCAR in the 1980s and collected 49 Xfinity Series and 40 Cup Series wins over 30 years. In an Instagram story on December 30, Earnhardt Jr. admired the Dennis Frings race car Martin used to win the 1984 Slinger Nationals at Slinger Speedway. The 200-lap race is the track's biggest racing event.
Martin took home the Larry Detjens Memorial Trophy for the first time at the asphalt track which opened in 1948.
"Damn what a beautifull car," Earnhardt Jr. commented.
Other top NASCAR drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Allison, and Alan Kulwicki have also raced at the track in Wisconsin.
"Put a really badass body on that car" - Mark Martin on the 1984 Late Model
Mark Martin, who did not have a ride for the 1984 season, left Charlotte and started over with Tom Rival, a team owner from Wisconsin and his crew, including Doug Hahn.
During a 2019 episode of the "Mark Martin Podcast," Martin talked about his career going into 1984 from the past "trainwreck" years and explained how they fixed up a Dennis Frings car to race in different events.
"Went to the shop and found that Frings car and stripped it down to the cage and got a new five-star super downforce body on it. The body rules were relaxed on the shows that we were going to run that car, so we, we built a really, put a really badass body on that car," Martin said (08:24).
He also got help from Ford Motorsports with engine parts and some sponsorship.
"It was a challenging time for us. Never worked so hard in all my life. Just, just grinding...Man, we won, we waxed them with that car at the Slinger Nationals. I'm talking about started 12th and drove by 'em all on the outside. Absolutely unbelievable. Won the Nationals with that Frings car, won several other Argo races up in Wisconsin in this particular year," he added (11:01 onwards).
Martin later got an offer to join Jerry Gunderman’s racing team, and he joined Bruce Lawmaster for a full-time ride in the 1987 NASCAR Busch (now Xfinity) Series. In his debut year, he had three wins and six poles.
Martin has the second most wins in the Xfinity Series but never won a NASCAR championship.
