Ty Norris, the former executive at DEI from 1996 to 2004, recalled the time when he made Dale Earnhardt Sr. quite angry. This was a story he told during a recently uploaded podcast on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Dirty Mo Media.
Norris said he 'got in trouble' with Dale Earnhardt Sr. after he dropped in on a business conversation with Dale Jr. The current Kaulig Chief Business Officer revealed how an endorsement deal came the way of Dale Jr. with Polaris. Interestingly, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was sponsored by Arctic Cat and both these companies were ATV companies.
Following hearing the offer by Polaris, Norris went to Junior's house, and upon hearing the offer, Junior immediately said 'Hell yeah, I'll do that.' But then Norris saw Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s truck pull up. He came into the house and asked what was going on, and when Ty Norris told him, Earnhardt simply instructed Norris to go to his office.
"He comes back later, he's mad as hell ... somebody had given him a bat, an Atlanta Braves bat, Dale walks in and grabs his bat and pacing back and forth and he's hitting his boot, he's hitting his boots and he's like, 'I got a damn Arctic Cat deal. You don't ever go to Dale Jr. with something that's in conflict with me. You don't talk to him about anything before you talk to me first.' I mean, he was mad! 'Don't you ever, ever do that again.' He puts the bat down and said, 'Now you can go to lunch,'" Norris described. [1:30:10]
He later apologized to Dale Earnhardt Sr. and said he'll never do it again.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. recalled crashing purposefully into Dale Earnhardt Sr. at Martinsville
During a 2018 episode on his podcast, Dale Earnhardt Jr. recalled the one time he made his father mad on the track.
Junior said that while he never 'rattled his cage,' he did make Dale Earnhardt Sr. angry 'a few times' in NASCAR.
"I raced dad really hard. When I was out there, I was obviously trying to show him what I was capable of doing, and so I was probably over my head a lot of the time trying to do too much. There were a lot of instances where we butted heads at the race track on the race track," Junior claimed.
He narrated one incident at Martinsville when Elliott Sadleer qualified on the front row alongside him with Dale Sr. behind them both. Junior said his father came upto both him and Sadler and praised their 'good cars' and hoped that if they were smart, they'd have 'a great day.'
As the green flag waved, Dale Earnhardt Sr. collided with Sadler. He then spun across the track, resulting in a crash with Junior. Later in the race, after Junior had repaired his car, Dale Earnhardt Sr. drove past him. Suddenly, Sr. turned sharply to the right, causing his right front tire to rub against the side of his car.
Junior claimed he was 'so mad', and days like that at Martinsville were some of the few examples of the father and son having 'rough days' on the track.
