Kevin Harvick recently opened up on Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosting NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series races on its oval layout after three seasons. This will be the first time the Next-Gen cars will race at the Brickyard 400 event for the track's 30th anniversary.
For the Indianapolis weekend, three races were scheduled over two racetracks. Truck Series took place at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP). Meanwhile, the Cup and Xfinity events return to the oval layout of Indianapolis after hosting the past three seasons at the infield road course.
In a recent episode of "Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour" podcast, the 48-year-old Harvick believes Indy is one of the magical places where the driver and his team do everything they possibly can to win this prestigious event. Harvick also said you're in the 'club' if you win the oval.
"They say, if you've won on the road course you aren't in a club...the only club you're in if you win the oval and can win the Brickyard 400 on the oval then you're in the club," Harvick said (27:56).
The former SHR driver Harvick believes the Xfinity race should go back to IRP, the short track and Brickyard event should be solely for Cup races. He said (29:05):
"I still believe that the Xfinity cars should be back over at IRP. I don't think that they should be at the Brickyard. I think it's a better race at IRP."
"I think that the Brickyard is one of those places that just demands the very top level of what you do and I'm not knocking the Xfinity series, I love the Xfinity series and what they do. But in my opinion, it should only be the cup series at the Brickyard I think it should be the show and we should put everything over at IRP like like it used to be," Harvick added.
The Cup Series Brickyard 400 event was first held in 1994 when NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon dominated by winning the race on his home track. He then won four more times at the NASCAR's Indy Jewel. Moreover, former NASCAR drivers like Jimmie Johnson won here four times, and Kevin Harvick and Dale Jarrett also won on three occasions.
Kevin Harvick reminisces about kissing the bricks at the Brickyard 400 event
NASCAR veteran Kevin Harvick talked about his 2003 win and the tradition of kissing the bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In a conversation with the co-hosts of the "Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour" podcast, Harvick shared the importance of winning and living his childhood dream. This was Harvick's 4th Cup Series win for Richard Childress Racing.
He said:
"It’s the closest that I have ever been able to actually explain to people living out your childhood dream. I grew up being a huge Rick Mears fan. I wanted to race Indy cars, I wanted to win the Indy 500, and to go and win the first time in 2003 was the coolest thing ever."
"It’s not that I don’t think that the Brickyard 400 is not bigger than the Daytona 500 but it meant as much to me to win Brickyard 400 as it did at Daytona because of the fact that I grew up, that’s where I wanted to race," Harvick added.
Moreover, Harvick received the #29 Chevy car, in which he won the race at Indianapolis, as a gift from the owner of RCR after Harvick's retirement in 2017.
