Last week’s Pennzoil 400 marked Alex Bowman's first victory in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series. If he manages to secure another win this week, then it will be the first back-to-back victories in his series career. It is, however, not going to be easy for Bowman at all.
The 28-year-old has a poor record on his home track, Arizona – in eight starts he never finished in the top-10. The Hendrick Motorsports driver is, however, looking to turn things in his favor and has plans to improve his performance at Phoenix Raceway.
In a recent interview with NASCAR.com, Alex Bowman shared his thought process for next week's race, saying:
“Drive more like my teammates, which isn’t something I enjoy doing or am good at doing. But I think with this race car, I kind of have to go more in their direction. I can’t be as loose as I want to be. Trying to make the right decisions to get us where we need to be when we unload there because, obviously, we don’t have much time after we unload and practice to get it right.”
Alex Bowman’s victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway might not have earned him a place in the playoffs, but a win this weekend at Ruoff Mortgage 500 would help secure his place.
The driver of the #48 Chevrolet Camaro is training hard for the one-mile track. Focusing on Phoenix, he didn’t even celebrate his victory in Vegas. Bowman said:
“As soon as the checkered flag fell at Vegas, I was all-in on Phoenix. There wasn’t a go home and party all night, there wasn’t any of that. I’ve just been training all week, trying to have my mind in the right place and make the right decisions to go there the right way. Hopefully, it works out. Definitely going there differently than I ever would have in the past.”
Alex Bowman talks about teammates and training strategy ahead of Phoenix Raceway
Alex Bowman feels every driver is different from one another. He is not going to drive like his teammates, but he will try everything that will help him win at Phoenix Raceway.
Speaking about every racer’s driving style, Bowman said:
“We’re definitely all different. Every race car driver is different. You can try to drive like somebody else all you want, but you’re always going to be different and look for different things and feel different things. The four teams work together really closely. Some weeks we go to the race track and the four cars are similar, some weeks they’re not. I just try to use their information to learn as much as I can.”
Despite winning Pennzoil 400, Bowman has ordinary betting odds of +2500 for Ruoff Mortgage 500. He will look to continue his winning momentum in Sunday's race and win his second consecutive race of the season.
