Zane Smith's wife McCall jibed at the uneventful Bass Pro Shops Night Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Mrs. Smith mentioned the drivers were "sh***ng on the race" while she savored her husband's comeback run.
The Round of 16 finale marked Bristol's 127th showing in the Cup Series and saw Hendrick Motorsports' Kyle Larson dominate 462 laps on the 'World's Fastest Half-Mile,' before registering his fifth Cup win this season. On the other hand, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, Ty Gibbs, and Harrison Burton were eliminated after failing to emerge above the cutline.
Zane Smith had a poor qualifying session and started his 500-lap battle from 33rd place. The Spire Motorsports driver climbed to a 26th-place finish in Stage 1 and settled in 25th in the second stage. But in the final stage, Smith's #71 Chevy lunged ahead of the rivals to post a 16th-place finish, the best among his Spire teammates Corey LaJoie (P36) and Carson Hocevar (P18).
While Smith's wife McCall enjoyed her husband's "awesome" race, she wasn't delighted with how the elimination night went and shared her experience. The Bass Pro Shops Night Race witnessed five cautions and no overtime, comparatively less chaotic than many races on the calendar. Taking to X, McCall wrote.
"Everyone 💩ing on the race last night while I thought it was SO entertaining but then I remembered I’m only watching Zane and it was awesome watching him come through the field. I don’t see what the TV shows lol," she Tweeted.
McCall also cheered on her husband after his comeback run at Bristol.
"That’s how Cup Series racing is right now": Zane Smith opens up on his rookie NASCAR season amid getting snubbed by Trackhouse Racing
Before entering NASCAR's Premier level, Zane Smith raced in the Truck Series. From six years in Truck racing, he amassed the 2022 championship, nine wins, and 61 top-10s. He inked a multi-year deal with Trackhouse Racing and is racing for its allied partner, Spire Motorsports.
It was expected when Trackhouse expanded to a three-car Cup team, Smith would be the driver behind the wheel. However, as the team added a third charter, they opted for Shane van Gisbergen instead of Smith. Thus, the 25-year-old is yet to find a Cup Series seat for the 2025 season.
Speaking to racer.com, Zane Smith explained the need to "capitalize" in the Cup Series and that "he's been racing with a chip on his shoulder" since the Nashville race, where he finished second.
“Truthfully, I’ve been racing with a chip on my shoulder, and I have been since Nashville. There have been some hard conversations and some of, ‘Hey, I’m fighting for my life here. We need to do maybe some type of strategy that seems crazy, but you never know what could happen. I have to have those runs that stand out,’" Smith said.
"That’s how Cup Series racing is right now, with how even everyone is from first to last. You have to do something that puts you in a position to capitalize, and that’s how we’ve been approaching and we’ve been carrying our momentum one week to the next,” he added.
With two top-5s and three top-10s, Zane Smith is currently placed 33rd in the standings.
