Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club has hired Chad Johnston as its new Manager of Race Engineering.

Johnston has worked as a crew chief in over 400 NASCAR races for several teams. Most recently, he was the crew chief for Ryan Preece in the No. 41 car at Stewart-Haas Racing. Johnston also worked with Tony Stewart’s No. 14 team in 2013 and with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2016, where he helped Kyle Larson win his first Cup Series race.

The Indiana native will lead the Legacy Motor Club’s engineering group and work closely with Brian Campe and Jacob Canter in the competition department.

Johnston started his NASCAR career as an engineer in 2004 with Morgan-Dollar Motorsports. He later worked with JTG Daugherty Racing and was the crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. at Michael Waltrip Racing. He helped the No. 56 team earn a win and several top finishes for about three years.

"Chad is a great hire for us at LEGACY MOTOR CLUB. His decades of experience and extensive knowledge will make him a huge benefit to the CLUB. We have a lot of work to do this off-season and Chad’s expertise will help us accomplish our goals,” said Technical Director Brian Campe.

Johnston brings over 20 years of experience in racing to the Jimmie Johnson-led team with seven Cup wins, as well as one Truck win.

"We will see how many times Jacob lets me go out" - Jimmie Johnson on another part-time season with Legacy Motor Club

Co-owner Jimmie Johnson will race in a few events for his team's No. 84 Toyota in 2025. He confirmed this at Phoenix Raceway and added that he wants to make sure his No. 84 car does not affect the other cars.

Seven-time Cup Series champion Johnson has raced 12 times over the past two years and wants better results in the next gen car.

"For 2025, we will make sure we use the [No. 84] car in the right capacity and in the right way so it doesn’t take anything away from the [Nos.] 42 or the 43. We will see how many times Jacob [Canter, director of competition at Legacy Motor Club] lets me go out and drive,” Jimmie Johnson said.

Legacy Motor Club currently fields two full-time cars in the Cup Series. The team's No. 42 driver John Hunter Nemechek finished 34th in the standings, while Erik Jones (No. 43) finished in 28th place.

The team has made other changes in the past few months. It added Jacob Canter, a long-time race engineer for Joe Gibbs Racing, as director of competition in August. Moreover, it hired Bobby Kennedy as general manager in July and Brian Campe as technical director last month.
