Joe Gibbs Racing team driver Martin Truex Jr. once came under NASCAR's radar for bursting out the R-word on the team radio at the Sonoma Raceway. He finished in P27 in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 race held on June 9, 2024, at the Sonoma Raceway.
Truex Jr. started his race with a poor qualifying lap and was the 21st fastest on the track. He faced a series of challenges throughout the race on the 1.99-mile road course, and since lap 2, the stock car association started throwing in cautions. Truex Jr.'s teammate and the driver of #11 Toyota Denny Hamlin raised the first caution on the track.
Hamlin's Toyota faced an engine failure leaking oil on the track, resulting in John Hunter Nemechek sliding his #42 into the wall, raising a caution. This marked the start of several restarts on the track; however, Martin Truex Jr. managed to regroup with the top ten cars and finished stage 2 in third place.
Truex Jr. is the driver with the most wins at the Sonoma Raceway. Despite Juniro's countless efforts to score his fifth win, he got caught up in several restarts and a massive stack-up during the 35th lap, which slowed down his #19 Toyota. This led to his bursting out on the team radio and saying:
"Turn 3 is such a stack up, you get run into by these f***ing r*****s." (via Jordan Bianchi on X)
This incident led NASCAR insider Jordan Bianchi to believe that Martin Truex Jr. could be sent on a sensitivity training program by the officials. Bianchi highlighted that a couple of years ago, two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch underwent the same before the 2022 season. Truex Jr., however, steered clear of the incident and dodged the sensitivity training program.
"I’m not sure why we didn’t try to save a little at the end" - Gas trouble knocked Martin Truex Jr. out of podium place
Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. started his race from P21 and only moved up two places in stage 1, finishing in P19. Despite facing countless hurdles and getting spun out during stage 2, the #19 Toyota driver didn't let his guard down and managed to bag third place.
In the final stage of the race, Truex Jr. competed for P2 but all of his efforts went in vain after his engine faced fuel scarcity.
"I’m not sure why we didn’t try to save a little at the end. I was clearly not going to catch [Kyle Larson] or pass him. It’s a shame that we went around the last corner and went from second to wherever we finished. It sucks, but it was a tough day, and we had a good car. We battled and did a good job. We were going to have a good day, but just one corner short," stated Martin Truex Jr. (via Racer.com)
After running out of gas, the defending winner slowly glided to the finish line, seeing other drivers crossing the victory line and finishing in P27.
