Recently, NASCAR issued a clarification about its new rule regarding the Open Exemption Provisional. It started with a post by veteran journalist Bob Pockrass, over which the fans were left divided.

As per one of the new rules announced last Wednesday, NASCAR will allow a 41st car to compete in its races, but only if the first 40 entries are locked in already. The pilot of this car must be a world-class driver and will not need to qualify for the main event; in this case, the 2025 Daytona 500, which is scheduled for February 16.

This year, Helio Castroneves, a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, will make his NASCAR debut for Trackhouse Racing under the provisional rule. However, the ‘don’t-need-to-qualify' aspect has sparked a debate among fans about how it could affect NASCAR's future.

Pockrass took to X to write:

“Got a clarification from NASCAR: If Helio Castroneves qualifies for the Daytona 500 through the duels or by speed, the field will be 40 cars. It will only be 41 if he fails to qualify and he uses the provisional (and then he/team doesn't get purse money, points, etc).”

Several fans reacted to Pockrass’ post, with one suggesting that it’s best if Castroneves qualifies just like the other series regulars.

“Or how about, hear me out. If he doesn’t qualify, he doesn’t make the cut,” the fan wrote.

Another fan commented:

“Or why doesn’t NASCAR respect itself to deny him entry if he can’t make the cut.”

Here are a few other reactions to Pockrass’ post:

“So you’re saying there’s no point in him qualifying since he’s in the race regardless?” another user wrote.
“They should just not qualify, that a way nobody gets shunned,” added another.
"Wait so if he fails to qualify and uses the provisional what’s the point of the provisional if the race team gets nothing except being in the race this is absolutely ridiculous. Unnecessary,” a fan typed.

2025 marks the 67th edition of the crown jewel Daytona 500, which has been the official season opener since 1982. This year’s running will stream live on FOX from 2:30 pm ET onwards. Fans can also listen to radio updates on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Helio Castroneves reveals past roadblocks on his way to racing in NASCAR

Helio Castroneves, driver of the No. 6 for Dallara-Honda for Meyer Shank Racing in the IndyCar Series, recently revealed how he had always wanted to race in NASCAR but an opportunity never came by. He blamed Roger Penske, the owner of Team Penske, a team that he drove for in the IndyCar Series until 2020.

Penske did not allow Castroneves to compete in any race outside of the Indy at the time. Reflecting on the same, the Brazilian driver said (via Newsweek):

“It's something that I was thinking about. I always wanted to do it. When I used to race with Penske, I asked about it, but Roger [Penske] never allowed me to.”
“But now, finally! You gotta keep pushing. You gotta keep believing one day, that dream will come true, and here we go,” Castroneves added.

Project 91 by Trackhouse Racing, known for backing international drivers like Shane van Gisbergen and Kimi Raikkonen in the past, will accommodate Castroneves' entry. Besides that, Wendy’s will act as his primary sponsor for the famed 500-miler.
