Sports analyst Larry McReynolds has thrown his weight behind calls to give former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle a Presidential medal for the work he is doing to help people affected by Hurricane Helene.
The hurricane has caused major damage in several areas, including western North Carolina. Biffle has been using his helicopter to deliver essential supplies in the hardest-hit regions. He also recently saved people stranded in a canyon surrounded by trees.
ESPN's Marty Smith posted about his admiration for Biffle's work on October 4 and said that he should receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his "heroic efforts."
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the US that is awarded to individuals for outstanding contributions to the public or country. FOX NASCAR analyst Larry McReynolds agreed with a post on X.
“Totally agree! What he and his wife have and are doing is amazing,” McReynolds wrote.
The NASCAR Foundation has set up a relief fund for fans to donate and is giving $150,000 to help the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Teams like Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing have also aided by offering their helicopters in North Carolina. Moreover, Joey Logano and his foundation have promised $250,000 while 23XI Racing will donate $500,000.
While many from the NASCAR community have helped with rescue efforts, Greg Biffle's actions stood out. He also received 500 Starlink kits and generators from Polaris to provide internet access in areas with no service.
"The scale of this is incredible" - Greg Biffle on Helene disaster
Hurricane Helene hit Florida as a Category 4 storm last weekend and has caused massive destruction. The death toll has reached over 200 and there is severe flooding, especially in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
Greg Biffle often shares updates on social media with other rescue workers as they bring food, medical supplies, and fuel to communities that are still unreachable by road.
Biffle showed in a video posted on October 3, how he landed in a small grassy spot surrounded by trees. He explained that a mirror signal helped him find the people needing help.
"The scale of the situation, to be honest with you, I don't even know how to put it into words. The problem is those mountain communities, all of the roads are completely washed off the side of the mountains. The road does not exit anymore, in or out, and it's not one area. It's not Asheville, it's not Banner Elk. It's all the way from the state line to the state line, so it is a huge undertaking. The scale of this is incredible," he said (via NASCAR.com).
Greg Biffle also thanked Polaris and SpaceX on his social media for their important support.
