Joey Logano showed the middle finger to Denny Hamlin and raged over the team radio during Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway. Hamlin revealed that he texted Logano during the rain relay at Nashville to resolve beef and addressed the whole incident on Monday’s “Actions Detrimental” podcast.
The incident occurred on Lap 123 when the duo got into each other. Denny Hamlin described the incident, emphasizing the importance of getting facts straight before reacting.
The #22 Team Penske Ford spotter over the team radio explained to Logano that Kyle Larson’s #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy had caused the collision by pushing Hamlin. Despite this, Logano told Hamlin to look at the data and remained skeptical.
Describing Logano's middle finger gesture at Nashville, Hamlin said:
“Joey was pissed at me, so I text Joey during the break and was like, ‘Bud, get your facts straight. I got jammed into you… I tried to explain to Joey like, I was trying to do you a favor and not split you three wide because I knew he was on older sh*t anyway.
“I was like I’m gonna help you get going here. And then I’ll pass you once we get to the corner. I lifted before Joey by the way in the SMT data, but as soon as I lifted, I got nailed. And it nailed me into the 5. And then the 5 drove into me and knocked both of us up the track.”

However, Joey Logano’s day got better from there, as he outlasted the other cars to secure his first win of the season after a NASCAR record-breaking five overtime restarts. On the other hand, Denny Hamlin was in contention to win but couldn’t survive the extended distance of the race due to low fuel and had to pit, surrendering the lead. He finished 12th in the running order.
Denny Hamlin addresses how the text conversation ended with Joey Logano during rain delay
During the rain delay with drivers returning to their haulers, the #11 Joe Gibbs Racing driver tried to sort the things via text, but Logano was not trying to understand anything. Recalling how the text exchange ended, Hamlin said:
“He responded quickly by saying, ‘F*ck you, look at the SMT.’ He’s like, ‘Have you looked?’ And I said, ‘No, but I know when I was hitting you and when I got hit. So, I’ll go back and look at it, but certainly I can tell you that I started to release off of you and I got pummeled into the corner.’ I was there.”
Joey Logano’s win locked his berth in the 2024 playoffs, standing 14th on the points table, while Denny Hamlin has already secured his playoff spot as he has three wins this season so far.
