Sprint car racer McKenna Haase provided a positive health update following her violent crash at the Knoxville Nationals on Friday night. In a video statement, Haase said her vitals were stable and she would soon be discharged from the hospital.
Haase was involved in a scary crash during the Friday night heat races at Knoxville Raceway. The opening lap skirmish in Heat #1 sent her straight into the Turn 1 wall, flipping her Sprint car after the heavy impact. She was taken to the Knoxville Hospital as trauma centers in Des Moines were reportedly full on Friday night.
Haase's mother Kelly Ann Haase had previously detailed the injuries her daughter sustained during the wreck. She wrote that her 27-year-old daughter had a pneumothorax (air outside the lungs caused by a hole/injury that may cause the lungs to collapse). The violent wreck had also left her body sore with a "ripped up mouth and tongue".
Haase, a Des Moines native, provided an update on her health on Sunday, August 11, on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the hole in her lung is stable. She added that she would return home later that night and expressed her gratitude for the prayers and incredible support from the Sprint car community.
"We are home! Words can’t describe how amazed and grateful we are by how supportive and loving the racing community has been this week. God is so good," the caption on her post read.
McKenna Haase said in a video statement from the hospital:
"Thank you so much for all the prayers and to everybody who reached out. We just got the news that the hole in my lung is stable enough for me to get discharged. So we get to go home tonight."
"Just thank you to everybody who's commented or sent flowers or cards or came into the merch trailer today and everybody for their generosity. It means more than you'll ever know. I'm just very grateful to be alive and grateful to have a loyal and loving sprint car community surrounding us. It just meant a lot to us and we're super thankful and hope to see you'll back at the track soon."

During the FVP Hard Knox night at Knoxville Raceway last Friday, McKenna Haase lined up for the green flag in the first heat. She was in the thick of the action in the opening lap when she made contact with Terry McCarl's car. Haase's #55 car ran over the right rear wheel of McCarl's #24 car, which sent her into the Turn 1 wall.
After the impact, Haase's Sprint car flipped violently before coming to rest upside down. She walked away from the incident with the help of the safety crew and was later taken to the Knoxville Hospital.
