Corey Lajoie reflected on his NASCAR career at Spire Motorsports. He will not return as the driver of the No. 7 Chevrolet in the Cup Series in 2025.
As Lajoie spoke in an episode of his podcast, 'Stacking Pennies', regarding how his career has seldom gone as planned, fans trolled the 32-year-old Charlotte native.
Corey Lajoie, the son of two-time Xfinity Series champion Randy LaJoie, joined Spire Motorsports in 2021. In 2023, the team signed a multi-year contract extension with LaJoie. Most recently, Spire Motorsports named Rodney Childers as the crew chief for the No. 7 team. However, who fills the driver's seat is unknown as of now.
Corey Lajoie has 258 career starts to his credit. 22 races in the season, LaJoie has just one top-5 and one top-10 finish to his name. While Corey Lajoie has won three races in the ARCA Menards Series, he is yet to bag a win in NASCAR's national series. Nevertheless, he seems to be grateful for how far he has come along in his career.
"I am super appreciative of where I'm at in life, financially, with my career," LaJoie said. "It went way different than I ever expected it. It's never been easy. My entire NASCAR career has not went how I thought that it was going to go. So why would I expect anything different, right?"
Referring to the ninth verse from Psalm 16, Lajoie said,
"The thing that I've been kinda clinging on to the last week to so... there's that proverb; 16:9, It's been pinned to my Twitter, or my X profile for almost 10 years now; 'Man can plan his path but Lord determines his steps' (We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps). I don't know what the next step is".
Several fans reacted to LaJoie's words, with one asking him to go back to racing on the ARCA platform.
"Good luck in arca," the fan said
Calling LaJoie "Mr. Podcast", another fan suggested that things would go well if the former performed better on the track.
"Well Mr Podcast…. Drive better…. Good things happen to those who perform," the fan said.
Here are some other reactions to Corey Lajoie's words on his career's trajectory at Spire Motorsports:
"Nobody cares ✌️✌️✌️," a fan said.
"Karma for losing your shit and deliberately taking out Busch sucks a fat one doesnt it. 😏," wrote another reflecting on LaJoie's tangle with Kyle Busch at Pocono Raceway last month.
"He didn’t even get the proverb right 😭" someone added.
Corey Lajoie currently sits 28th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 324 points to his name. He finished 14th last week in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"I’ve agonized over this decision"- Spire Motorsports owner on Corey Lajoie leaving the Chevy team
Corey Lajoie has been an integral part of the team for 4 years now. However, NASCAR is a performance-based sport and for several reasons, the performance has not been up to the mark for the No. 7 team. Speaking of which, Spire Motorsports owner, Jeff Dickerson said,
"In racing, there are always variables, but one thing we all know, is this is a performance-based business, and it just hasn’t been there for several reasons. All those reasons are factored in when it comes to making a decision of this magnitude." (via Spire Motorsports)
It pains Dickerson to have to let Lajoie go. He recalled the good old days when Corey Lajoie used to roll up his sleeves and put in the work even before they had their own race shop, their own tools, or even, their own cars.
"Those days, looking back, were so much simpler than where we are in our journey now," Dickerson said. "Back then, we just wanted to get to the racetrack. Today, we’re consumed with consistently battling for top-10 finishes and contending for wins in the near future."
"It would be impossible to overstate what he’s meant to this organization and how much I’ve agonized over this decision," he added.
Meanwhile, Michael McDowell is expected to leave Front Row Motorsports and join Spire Motorsports next year as the driver of the #71 car. Currently, Zane Smith drives that car in an alliance with Trackhouse Racing. McDowell's move to Spire will hence have Smith looking for a new ride.
