NASCAR races are long and grueling, and a while back, Cup Series drivers Joey Logano and Chase Elliott talked about how they handle needing to go to the bathroom during a race.
NASCAR races can last for three to four hours and many fans wonder what happens if a driver needs to go to the bathroom during a race. Two drivers were asked what they would do in that scenario. Chase Elliott, who drives the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro for Hendrick Motorsports, answered with a chuckle (in an interview with NBC from 2019).
"Um, well, you just go, yeah. It is kind of gross," said Elliott.
Joey Logano, who drives the No. 22 Ford Mustang for Team Penske, also had a humorous response.
"Well, the good thing is I have a yellow suit," Logano joked.
NASCAR drivers have to spend hours in their cars in extreme heat, and one unexpected challenge they face is managing to go to the bathroom during a race.
Most drivers do not stop for bathroom breaks during a race as they would lose their spots. However, when a race is paused (red-flagged), they can get out and use the bathroom.
Diapers are flammable and not safe in a race car. And since safety is always the top concern, drivers avoid wearing diapers under their fire suits to protect themselves. Race cars can easily catch fire during crashes.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., another well-known NASCAR driver, was also asked the same question in another interview a few years ago and he gave an honest answer.
“If you can hold it, you hold it. If you can’t, you go...It’s not too often that this happens because the car is real hot, and you sweat a lot, and you basically lose all your water weight through sweating,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr.
"I think it’s really good and it’s healthy"- Chase Elliott on 2025 Mexico Cup race
NASCAR has released the 2025 Cup Series schedule and added a new international race track. A points pace will be held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City next year.
Chase Elliott recently praised NASCAR for trying new things that would not have happened in the past. He thinks that it is good for the sport and something worth continuing if it goes well.
“I think to get outside the country is really a pretty cool thing. And it’s a pretty cool honor for us to have a following big enough to be able to leave and go somewhere and have an event and draw a big enough crowd for it to be successful. I think it’s really good and it’s healthy, and it’s something that we should probably look at doing if it goes well," Chase Elliott said.
The NASCAR Cup Series race in Mexico City will take place on June 15, 2025 and will be broadcast on Prime Video.
