Richard Childress Racing driver Jesse Love clinched his maiden NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at Talladega Superspeedway, taking the checkered flag in a double overtime finish.
As the Xfinity Series returned to a drafting track, RCR drivers Love and Austin Hill were in the thick of the action for much of the race. The 19-year-old rookie won the first stage of the race while the experienced Hill won the second stage.
Hill was involved in a late-race incident while Jesse Love steered clear of trouble, setting himself up for the race win. Love managed to hold off Leland Honeyman and Riley Herbst to win the race in the second overtime restart.
After losing out on a victory at Atlanta, the #2 RCR driver stretched his fuel mileage this time around to claim the win. Despite his car passing post-race inspection, many NASCAR fans raised suspicions over his ability to stretch the mileage 11 laps beyond the scheduled distance.
One X (formerly Twitter) user humorously suggested that Jesse Love must've smuggled fuel in his drinks bottle.
"This guy got fuel in his drink bottle."
Another comment read:
"Can't see how he made the gas stretch when no one else could if it was me I would be taking that car for further testing just to be sure there's no hanky panky going on"
Another X user blamed Love for causing a wreck in the first restart:
"Wrecked everyone to win making a dumb move on the restart"
Here are a few other reactions to the #2 RCR driver's maiden victory:
"Y’all better inspect that gas tank!! Somethings fishy," one fan wrote.
"Check the car cause how did he have enough gas I wonder," another fan suggested.
The 19-year-old also garnered praise for securing his first Xfinity win at the famed oval:
"Kid got some talents for learning how to save fuel in the amount of time from Atlanta to now," an X user wrote.
"That's gotta be the greatest feeling, getting your first win on an iconic track!," another fan chimed in.
Jesse Love confesses having "PTSD flashbacks" of Atlanta
In the second round of the season at Atlanta, the #2 Richard Childress Racing driver ran out of fuel, missing out on a deserving victory. Love confessed that he had similar flashbacks in the final stint of the race at Talladega as he raced for the checkered flag.
Jesse Love said in the post-race interview with Frontstretch:
"Just a great group of guys [on my team] and it’s been such a journey to get to this point. I got so many people to thank. I just wanted it so bad and I had PTSD flashbacks from Atlanta."
Nine races into the season, Jesse Love sits in fourth position in the Xfinity Series drivers standings, 41 points adrift of leader Chandler Smith.
