Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle made his feelings known about winning the 2024 Myers Brothers Award. While Biffle was surprised about the win, he was honored and received the award at this year's NASCAR awards banquet in Charlotte.
Biffle is a 54-year-old former NASCAR driver who secured 19 race wins in the Cup Series. He was named the recipient of the 2024 Myers Brothers Award for his search and rescue efforts using his own helicopter in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
The awardee took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared his thoughts on winning the accolade.
“Honored to be named the @NMPAonline 2024 Myers Brothers Award Recipient at the @NASCAR Banquet last night it was such a surprise!! Thank you,” Biffle wrote.
Awarded by the National Motorsports Press Association, the Myers Brothers Award is given to individuals or groups who made an outstanding contribution to the sport of stock car racing.
Greg Biffle joined other past recipients of the award including Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Sr.
During the search and rescue missions, Biffle delivered essential goods to families affected by the hurricane, including EpiPens, insulin, and formula, among other items. He also coordinated the rescue efforts of other volunteers who had helicopters themselves.
Last October, the former NASCAR driver said he didn't want to take credit for the relief program after getting a lot of recognition for his efforts.
"I don’t want to take credit for this whole thing. Certainly, I’m getting a lot of credit. There are so many people that have stories just like mine.” [8:30]
The unfortunate destruction of Hurricane Helene took the lives of over 230 individuals.
NASCAR veteran applauded Greg Biffle for rescue efforts amid Hurricane Helene relief
NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace had high praise for Greg Biffle for aiding the affected families of Hurricane Helene. In an X post in October, Wallace acknowledged Biffle and thanked him for his efforts.
"Greg Biffle is incredible. He's doing this on his own. He's got an incredible machine shop. This is a guy that is just awesome. Thank you Biff, for what you're doing. You're a badass. Ain't nobody better than you right now, and you landing that helicopter down in those woods just shows everybody that while you were such a great race car driver."
Moreover, the former NASCAR driver recalled how Biffle conducted a relief program during a hurricane in Florida about three to five years ago.
"I saw Biff get his pickup truck and some trailer all on his own, and he gathered, uh, some wood and, uh, you know, all the materials he needed. And he said, 'I'm just headed south to see who I can help, he added [00:34].
NASCAR also honored Biffle by having him serve as the honorary starter at the Charlotte roval playoff race. He was given a standing ovation during the drivers' meeting before waving the green flag to start the race.
The Bank of America Roval 400 witnessed Kyle Larson winning his sixth race of the season.
