In a recent episode of his podcast, Stacking Pennies, Corey LaJoie addressed his involvement in the Lap 1 collision at Watkins Glen that disrupted several drivers' races, including Kyle Busch's. The incident occurred at the bus stop turn, where a jostle for position led to LaJoie and Kyle Busch colliding.
This initial contact triggered a chain reaction, causing Busch to spin and subsequently collide with Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, and Denny Hamlin, among others. The impact forced Ryan Blaney to retire from the race after his car was towed to the garage, while others continued despite the damage.
Despite the chaos, Corey LaJoie managed to secure an eighth-place finish, whereas Kyle Busch concluded the race in the 30th position. During the podcast, LaJoie offered his perspective on the cause of the wreck, shedding light on the incident from his viewpoint.
"I wanted to give the #8 room there off the wall to want to crowd them and then I ended up coming into his left rear there. There's really no excuse for that. My only intention the first lap was to get singled out and not ruin anybody's day and then that's the exact opposite what happened," he said
"There's a magnet. for the #7 and the #8 car unfortunately. And he's had the short in a stick, so I'm just waiting on, pay back," LaJoie continued.
Corey LaJoie's comments on his podcast prompted a flurry of responses in the comments section, where fans expressed their reactions to his explanation of the events, with one of the fans writing:
"Not his fault he has no ability."
Here are a few more reactions from the fans, who were less than convinced by his justification:
"Stacking wrecked race cars," a fan commented, seemingly taking a dig at the name of his podcast.
"Stacking DNFs," another fan added.
"Stacking Patties 2025 “I went to put the second patty on the McDouble and tripped over my coworker and fell right into the ice cream machine and it broke again. Really no excuse,”" a fan commented.
"At least he knows its a driver issue," another fan added.
"He shows he can't drive the car he wrecks everyone but himself every week. Sorry, not sorry, but that's why he's out of a ride. And Nascar backs him with this stuff lol," another fan wrote.
"He’s right. No excuse," a fan mentioned.
Denny Hamlin talks about the Corey LaJoie and Kyle Busch incident on Lap 1
Denny Hamlin, directly affected by the first-lap incident at Watkins Glen involving Corey LaJoie and Kyle Busch, offered his perspective on the crash. His #11 Toyota sustained considerable damage, impacting his performance and resulting in a 23rd-place finish. Discussing the incident, Hamlin commented on Corey LaJoie's role, noting (via Actions Detrimental on YouTube):
"It looked like the No. 7, Corey, just hit the rumble strips a little bit wrong and it shot him into the door of the No. 8. Spun out the No. 8, and stack-up ensued," Hamlin said [at 12:36].
This isn't the first instance of on-track conflict between Corey LaJoie and Kyle Busch, including a previous collision at Pocono. Fans are keen to see if the series of events will prompt Kyle Busch to retaliate in future races.
