Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently commented on Kyle Larson's radio outburst on his spotter at New Hampshire. At one point during the race, Denny Hamlin took advantage of the #5 driver, post which Larson was told by his spotter, Tyler Monn, that Hamlin does such things because he lets him.
It led to Larson firing back on the radio with 'Shut the f**k up,', which was, as per Dale Earnhardt Jr., somewhat justified.
On the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download, Earnhardt shared his thoughts on this subject and spoke of the thin line a spotter has to maintain with his driver.
"I think Kyle has that in him, but he doesn’t really — I think it’s way deep in the toolbox. He’s not an ovoverly aggressiveuy, when you kind of push him around a little bit. He doesn’t get too crazy, he just races. I think they’re trying to tell him, ‘Look man, stop letting that happen,’ and he ain’t wanting to hear that, from his guys, So he snapped, and finally shot back, and made it pretty clear that type of information from his spotter isn’t something he’s going to want to hear anytime in the future," Junior said.
He claimed that Larson firing back on his spotter is pretty much "the end of the conversation." Earnhardt mentioned that Larson, being the driver, will have the final word, whereas the crew chief will have "a little more leverage" to hold the driver accountable.
As for the spotters, Earnhardt added that they have to be honest and tell it like it is while being mindful of their boundaries.
"It's good for them to be honest. It's good for them to tell like it is. But there's a line there where you gotta be careful or the driver's going to fire back," Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. believes Kyle Larson is getting 'a bit tired' with his team's attitude
Speaking on the Dale Jr. Download, Dale Earnhardt Jr. also claimed that the 2021 Cup champion might have had enough of his team telling him what to do and what not to do.
"Kyle Larson, I think, is getting a bit tired of the prodding from those individuals that he relies on to support him. We’ve seen and heard this a little bit before, where his crew chief can be quite blunt and straight up with him, about what’s going on, or what he thinks he needs to do," Junior said.
The former Hendrick Motorsports driver mentioned that Larson isn't the kind of driver who won't use the bumper, but he's one who "picks and chooses his battles."
But as Hamlin decided to take advantage of him at turn 4 in New Hampshire, Earnhardt believed there wasn't much Larson could've done in that situation.
Dale Jr. further said that what Larson could've done if such a situation came up again is to let Hamlin know that he's "sick of it" and let him know that the latter should leave him room and race fair.
