William Byron blamed Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe for his crash during the 2024 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The #24 driver was part of a multi-car crash during the second stage of the race.
Midway through the second stage at Indianapolis, the Cup Series grid bunched up. This resulted in close contact between multiple cars, and the Hendrick Motorsports driver was seemingly the worst affected. He could be seen going off the track and hitting the wall. Piling up behind him was the #16 Chevrolet of AJ Allmendinger.
The crash took out three drivers from the race; William Byron, AJ Allmendinger, and Harrison Burton. Given that this was only on the 24th lap of the second stage of the competition, Byron was furious. He had qualified in P4 for the race, and the DNF was not the result he was expecting.
Byron went ahead and blamed the incident on Chase Briscoe, driving the #14 for Stewart-Haas Racing. He said:
"Yeah, he lifted and came up in front of me and choked me up. We’re just back there with the squirrels."
"Everybody's trying to get all they can get": William Byron on restarts after crash ends his race early
The entire field was bunched up because of a restart during the race which led to multiple-car crashes at Indianapolis. Byron, while talking about the restart, mentioned that all the drivers were pushing too hard to gain positions. In the midst of that, the #14 stopped him up which sent him off of the track and into the wall. He explained:
"We just got back there and the restarts are crazy. Everybody's trying to get all they can get. The 14 pulled up in front of me and stopped. I had to check up and got run over," he told Rob Blackman.
William Byron was reported to be okay and safe after the crash, however, his race came to an early end. He is currently all set to make his way to the playoffs this season with three wins in his bag. He won the season-opening Daytona 500, was in victory lane at the Circuit of The Americas, and followed the success in Martinsville.
Three wins early in the season promised a strong contention for William Byron's first Cup Series championship. He has also been within the top 5 at four different events other than his wins. He followed a similar path of success in 2023 but finished the championship in third place. He had clinched a total of six wins in the season.
