“He didn’t see the point in getting married” - When Amy Earnhardt shared how Dale Earnhardt Jr. reconsidered marriage after realizing family’s value

Two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. has often spoken about his personal life, including his initial hesitations about marriage and marriage proposals. His wife, Amy Earnhardt, once revealed how Dale Jr.’s perspective changed when he began to understand the importance of family and marriage.

Six years ago, during an interview with “In Depth With Graham Bensinger," Amy Earnhardt revealed that Dalr Jr. didn’t see marriage as a necessity in his life. NASCAR Hall of Famer was focused on his NASCAR career during that time and often expressed his doubts about marriage. However, his relationship with Amy, whom he married on New Year’s Eve in 2016, became a turning point.

“He said so many times for so many years that he just wasn't going to get married. He didn't want to get married. He didn't see the point in getting married, but he wanted to have kids. And so, I told him, I get you're not wanting to get married; we don't have to get married, but I'm never having children with you if we aren't. I'm just not doing that, not willing to do that,” Amy said. [2:15]

Dale Earnhardt Jr. later shared that Dale Jr.’s eventual decision to embrace marriage stemmed from his growing understanding and from his past of what family truly means.

Discussing what changed Dale Jr.’s mind about marriage, Amy said:

“I think because he realized how important it was and how important family was, and that is kind of the starting element of it. And he wanted to do all of that right. Coming from his background with his mom and dad and just all the things they went through, I think he realized that if he continued with this path he was on mentally, he wasn't going to be much different.”
