NASCAR YouTuber Eric Estepp appreciated Jeff Gordon's scouting skills after Hendrick Motorsports signed a development deal with Corey Day. The deal was apparently signed in December and Day will make a few appearances in races with the HendrickCars.com car.
After driving for the team all his career, Gordon assumed the vice-chairman role at Hendrick Motorsports in 2022. This gives him power within the team to make decisions and implement them, with the team recently signing Corey Day. A quote from team owner Rick Hendrick took the spotlight in the press release. It read:
"When Kyle Larson and Jeff Gordon say someone is the real deal, it certainly gets your attention."
This was about signing Corey Day to the driver development role. YouTuber Eric Estepp mentioned that Jeff Gordon has had a major role to play in a few drivers' signing, such as Jimmie Johnson to HMS in the early 2000s. Johnson went on to win seven Cup Series championships with the team.
Estepp claims that Gordon has "an eye for talent" that helps him scout the best drivers.
"Jeff Gordon famously pushed Rick Hendrick to sign Jimmie Johnson back in 2002 despite Jimmie Johnson's resume being fairly thin at the time," Estepp said (at 2:30). "Obviously that worked out pretty darn well for Hendrick Motorsports. So Jeff Gordon has an eye for talent and right now 19-year-old Corey day has his attention."
Rick Hendrick credits Jeff Gordon and Kyle Larson in scouting out Corey Day
As mentioned earlier, Rick Hendrick credited both Jeff Gordon and Kyle Larson (their driver of the #5 Chevrolet) for spotting Corey Day and his talent in driving. He also mentioned that Day comes from a racing family and his level of talent has "set him apart."
Hendrick seemingly has high hopes for signing Corey Day this season. It will also be a major positive for the 19-year-old, attempting to make his way to the pinnacle of stock racing.
"When Kyle Larson and Jeff Gordon say someone is the real deal, it certainly gets your attention. Corey comes from a great racing family and in a short time has shown a level of talent that sets him apart. What he’s already accomplished at this point in his career speaks volumes, and it’s been impressive to see how quickly he’s adapted to pavement. We’re excited to welcome him to our team."
Corey Day is set to participate in a few races with the HendrickCars.com partnership in 2025. He will race in nearly 30 events, including eight appearances in the Truck Series with the #7 Spire truck and four ARCA Menards races. He will be piloting the #77 Spire car in ARCA.
