Connor Zilisch unraveled how he switched sports at an early age to become a racing driver. He revealed how his soccer coach suggested his father to take him to a go-kart, kickstarting his journey in racing.
Zilisch is one of the most sought-after drivers in American motorsport. The 18-year-old is racing across multiple series like the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Craftsman Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series and more. However, none of that would have been possible without his soccer coach's advice.
The young racing driver, on the Stacking Pennies podcast with Corey Lajoie on NASCAR's YouTube channel, talked about his racing career.
While speaking about how he started his racing career, the Charlotte-born driver mentioned his soccer coach's efforts, without whom Zilisch might not have had such a solid racing foundation.
"For me, I got the chance to start racing at four and a half years old, Zilisch said.
"I was a soccer player, and my soccer coach suggested to my dad since he knew my dad, and you know my dad had a Corvette and like cars, and he (soccer coach) suggested, 'hey you should get me, and I have two older brothers.'" (6:28-6:41)
"So my dad was taking his car to the track at the time... just for fun, and my soccer coach was like, 'Hey, you should get your kid's go-karts and start taking them to the go-kart track," Zilisch added. (6:43, 6:52-6:57)
From a soccer player during his childhood, Connor Zilisch has become a fascinating racing driver. So much so that at such a young age, he's handling multiple duties like being the development driver for the Cup Series team, Trackhouse Racing.
The NASCAR rising star races for JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series and for Spire Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series. In the ARCA Menards Series. He races for Pinnacle Racing Group, and for Silver Hare Racing in the Trans-Am Racing.
Connor Zilisch explained why he chose a varied racing schedule
Connor Zilisch, on the Dirty Mo Media podcast, revealed the reason behind his varied racing scheme. Answering Freddie Kraft's question, the 18-year-old said:
"I think this year I wanted to run as much diverse of a schedule as I could just because I wanted to experience in as many different things as I could to learn as much as I can.”
Zilisch's list did not end there, as the racing sensation finds time to take part in the CARS Tour as well. Moreover, he also takes part in the IMSA Sportscar Championship (for Era Motorsport) and the Global MX-5 Cup.
In a nutshell, Connor Zilisch is showing unreal commitment to racing at the age of just 18.
