Kyle Larson will once again attempt to run “The Double” in 2025. On Tuesday (September 10), Hendrick Motorsports and the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team, at a joint press conference at Chalotte Motor Speedway, announced that Larson will attempt to compete in “The Double” on Memorial Day weekend, running both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
As part of a continued partnership between Arrow McLaren and Hendrick Motorsports, Larson will drive the #17 HendrickCars.com/Arrow McLaren Chevrolet in his second Indianapolis 500 appearance at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 25, 2025.
This second opportunity to run the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola double will be an effort at redemption from Larson's 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion attempt this season. He fell short of completing 1,100 miles in the two events due to rain this year.
Larson finished P18 at Indianapolis after a storm delayed the start of the Indy 500. He then immediately flied to Charlotte Motor Speedway to join NASCAR’s crown jewel Coca-Cola 600 in progress. Mother Nature halted the Charlotte race short of its scheduled end, and Larson could not complete The Double.
Larson joined the elite list of drivers this year as one of only five to ever attempt the Indy 500 and Coke 600 double. In the following season, he will join Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon as the third driver to attempt it twice.
Coca-Cola 600 is a priority for Kyle Larson if rain affects The Double
Kyle Larson’s boss Rick Hendrick has confirmed that Larson will race in NASCAR’s crown jewel Coke 600 if there’s rain and the start of the Indianapolis 500 is delayed.
In case that happened then, the 2004 IndyCar Series champion Tony Kanaan will replace Larson in the #17 entry at Indy.
According to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass:
“Rick Hendrick says that Kyle Larson will race the 600 if there is rain for the Indy 500 and it is delayed. Tony Kanaan announced today as the backup driver for the Indy 500. Hendrick said his commitment to NASCAR is that is where he runs full time for the championship.”
Coming to his 2024 NASCAR season, Kyle Larson is chasing his second NASCAR Cup title. He opened the NASCAR playoffs season with a Stage 1 crash at Atlanta last week and finished 37th. That early exit in the playoff opener left Larson in a tricky position in the playoff standings, just 15 points above the cutline.
The 32-year-old will look to bounce back in the second playoff race at Watkins Glen International this weekend.
