Montoya is 48 years old and a native of Bogota, Colombia. Before transitioning to NASCAR and IndyCar, he was a renowned Formula 1 driver with seven wins. Montoya won the CART Drivers' Championship title in 1999 and the IMSA SportsCar Championship in 2019. He also has two triumphs in the esteemed Indianapolis 500 race and was the runner-up in the 2015 IndyCar Series.
The veteran driver is set to return to NASCAR's top division in a part-time stint for this season's race at Watkins Glen International.
Juan Pablo Montoya to drive for 23XI Racing in a one-off race
Famed professional racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya will be the third driver to pilot the #50 Toyota for 23XI Racing this season. Previously, Kamui Kobayashi and Corey Heim drove the Camry to commemorate Mobil1's 50th anniversary.
Montoya in a press release said (via NASCAR):
"I’m looking forward to getting back in a Cup car and racing at Watkins Glen – a track I really enjoy and had the chance to experience earlier in my career. It’s an honor to celebrate the Mobil 1 team’s remarkable legacy in racing and be recognized for my contributions to motorsports."
"The Mobil 1 brand was one of my first sponsors when I started racing, so to represent the brand again as they celebrate this milestone will be so special. I’m also excited to work with 23XI and experience what the team is building." Montoya added.
Montoya last competed for Team Penske in 2014. However, he found major recognition for his driving with Chip Ganassi Racing, where he accumulated two wins and 59 top-10 finishes. He is set to mark his return on the same racetrack where he last won in the Cup Series. His #50 Toyota would be a third entry alongside #23 Bubba Wallace and #45 Tyler Reddick.
