Kyle Busch ended his 15-year stint with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2022 to join Richard Childress Racing the following season. He has since been racing with them, piloting the #8 Chevrolet on the field, and is set to continue in the next season of the NASCAR Cup Series.
While his contract's exact details and commitment are unknown, he was given a multi-year deal beginning in 2023, keeping him with the team at least until 2026. Some sources claim that 2025 was an option year for him, but he is confirmed to race with RCR this season.
Busch replaced Tyler Reddick in the team, who moved to 23XI Racing. It was rather unexpected when he left Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of the 2022 season, however, he had his eyes set on RCR from the start of the season. Explaining his move to the team, he had mentioned that he felt how fast the #8 was while racing at the Coliseum at the start of the season.
"I think it started earlier this year when we were racing at the (Los Angeles) Coliseum when the 8 car blew my doors off and was driving away," Autoweek quoted him. "I certainly knew right then and there at the beginning of the season that those guys definitely had some speed."
Busch's first season with the team was as competitive as it could get. He had a strong start and won three races, but finished the season in 14th place. However, the last season showered down major disappointment for him as he failed to win any races, breaking a 19-year streak in his Cup Series career.
Kyle Busch on his "frustrating" 2024 Cup Series season with RCR
Kyle Busch's performance in the #8 Chevy in the last Cup Series season was quite questionable. He looked strong initially, finishing 12th in the Daytona 500 and then moving up to third place in Atlanta, however, his performance took a serious hit following that.
He amassed a couple of other top-five positions throughout the length of the season but remained distant from being crowned the race winner. Looking back at the season in November, he mentioned that it was "certainly frustrating".
"Certainly frustrating," NASCAR quoted Kyle Busch. "Just not at all what we had hoped it to be after some success last year, especially early in the year and having those three wins, and then struggling a little bit on and off, but then this year, just seemingly not being able to get the monkey off our back. I mean, even having a shot to win late in the day and being close at Daytona and maybe even closer at Kansas and just not being able to pull through."
He also pointed out a few positives as he felt there were moments when the team performed well.
"We probably had a handful of opportunities that slipped out from under us. So can’t say that we shouldn’t have won this year or never had an opportunity to, but obviously didn’t get it done," he concluded.
Both Kyle Busch and Richard Childress Racing have better expectations heading into the 2025 Cup Series season.
