Roger Penske won three more editions of the Indy 500s throughout the 80s, thanks to drivers Bob Unser (1981), Danny Sullivan (1985), and Al Unser (1987). Emerson Fittipaldi, a native of Brazil, claimed the Indy 500 victory in 1993 for Penske, while Al Unser Jr. won the 1994 Indy 500 in a Penske car.

Penske went on a seven-year dry spell without an Indy 500 victory before winning three straight from 2001-2003. Hélio Castroneves won back-to-back 500s in 2001 and 2002, while Gil de Ferran became the 2003 Indy 500 champion. Sam Hornish Jr., who eventually drove for Penske in the NASCAR Cup Series, claimed the Indy 500 trophy in 2006 for Penske's 14th win in the event.
