NASCAR fans may know Roger Penske as the boss of Team Penske but he also owns other assets in the racing scene. Penske has even purchased ownership stakes in race tracks, something he began doing in the 1970s.

Roger Penske is an 87-year-old American racing businessman, prominent in the motorsports world. His race team, Team Penske, has competed in several series globally, including Australia's Supercars, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and Formula 1.

Most recently, Penske purchased the street circuit in California where the Long Beach Grand Prix is held. This begs the question of how many tracks the motorsports tycoon owns. Read on to find out.

Roger Penske owns two race tracks

Roger Penske, through the Penske Entertainment company, owns two US-based race tracks. The first track is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, while the other, as mentioned earlier, is the Long Beach street circuit.

Penske purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from the Hulman George Family in 2019. Part of the deal was the acquisition of the NTT IndyCar Series and IMS Productions, a multimedia division tasked to broadcast IndyCar and IMS events to the world.

The 2019 acquisition was said to be one of the biggest in motorsports, with the deal reportedly worth between $250 million and $300 million.

According to the owner, he has probably spent $30 million to $35 million since taking over the track. So far, the investments seem to be worthwhile, as the 2024 Indy 500 reportedly drew a crowd of around 345,000 people, just 5,000 shy of the record set in 2016.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, also known as the Brickyard, is a 2.5-mile oval track that holds NASCAR's Brickyard 400 and IndyCar's Indy 500. Penske also owns an IndyCar team, which fields three drivers and uses a Chevrolet powertrain as opposed to Ford in NASCAR.

Meanwhile, Penske Entertainment purchased the Long Beach Grand Prix on November 14, 2024. Penske brought the race from Gerald Forsythe, a long-time IndyCar owner, who had a 50 percent stake with the late Kevin Kalkhoven.

The new ownership will ensure that the street race will stay synonymous with the IndyCar Series.

The Long Beach Grand Prix is a street race event held in Long Beach, California, which has a track length of 1.9 miles with 11 turns. For the 2025 season, the race will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Team Penske has seven victories on the track.

Roger Penske's previously owned tracks

In the early 1970s, Roger Penske purchased the Michigan International Speedway for an estimated $2 million. The owner managed to increase the grandstand capacity from 25,000 to 125,000 seats. He also built other buildings including garages, 28 pit terrace suites, and an entertainment shop, among others.

Penske later built the Auto Club Speedway, also known as the California Speedway, which he modeled after the Michigan track. He also purchased a stake in the Homestead-Miami Speedway in 1997 and North Carolina Speedway in 1998.

However, before the beginning of the 21st century, Penske sold his tracks to the International Speedway Corporation.
