On October 2, 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, announced they'd be suing NASCAR in court over their charter disagreements. Discussing the situation, insiders Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi weighed in on the mood inside NASCAR's camp on The Teardown, with the latter revealing what a team owner had to say after 23XI released their statement.
Gluck claimed that if he was in the NASCAR camp, he would be "absolutely livid." Giving his take on where he thinks things stand from a legal point of view, Gluck said (via DirtyMoMedia on X):
"'We gave them these charters. They grew to be over $40 million, now we're giving them more TV money. What else do you people want? This is our family's sport'. But the facts are, they control the tracks. They control the cars, they control the competition. Perhaps there's a case to be made that by the legal definition, this is a monopoly. I don't know, this is for the court to decide. If I'm the owners who did sign this (charter agreement), I'm thinking, 'Maybe I would've liked to hold out', because the only reason I signed because I thought I was going to lose my charters and I couldn't afford to do that," Gluck said.
Following Gluck's take on the subject, podcast co-host Jordan Bianchi made a big revelation about an unnamed team owner, saying
"I had a team owner today tell me, 'I did not have the b**ls to do what 23XI did because I was worried about losing my charters,'" Bianchi said.
Rick Hendrick on why HMS signed the charter agreement amid 23XI Racing's standoff with NASCAR
During a press conference on September 11, team owner Rick Hendrick shared his take on the charter agreement situation. Hendrick mentioned that the teams worked 'really hard' during the negotiations while remarking that the entire process had been 'draining'. Discussing the entire situation, Hendrick said (as quoted by AP):
"Not everybody was happy. But in any negotiation, you’re not going to get everything you want, and so I felt it was a fair deal and we protected the charters, which was number one, we got the (revenue) increase, I feel a lot of things we didn’t like we got taken out, so I’m happy with where we were," he said.
As for his take on 23XI Racing and FRM refusing to sign the charter agreement, Rick Hendrick said that while he didn't have anything to add, he felt that the teams had several meetings on the matter, and the majority agreed that it was time to accept what was on offer.
Having said that, the HMS owner claimed that if NASCAR would offer a separate deal with the two teams(23XI Racing and FRM), then similar concessions should be offered to the other teams in the garage.
