With four races left in the regular season, Bubba Wallace finds himself a spot below the playoffs cutline. The 23XI Racing driver is currently trailing Ross Chastain by seven points and hopes to make the playoffs for the second season in a row.
Given his current situation, Wallace was asked on Saturday whether he's focusing on getting a win or getting in through points to the playoffs, to which the #23 driver had a clear answer.
"Let's not get it messed up. From day 1, we're always showing up to win and that's our mentality each and every race, even road courses, I can confidently say that," Wallace said in a Frontstretch YouTube video. [2:18]
The 30-year-old further pointed out that during a race, one gets to know about their car after the first stage and they adapt a strategy based on that knowledge. He mentioned that sometimes, it takes two stages to figure out the car. Thus, Wallace opined that a driver has to be fluid with the situation and the race.
Despite going through a race-winning weekend or a weekend with a ceiling of a top 10 finish, Wallace claimed he never gives up or stops fighting.
"That's what our team is about. That's what I embody myself no matter how tough the going gets. You keep swinging. Keep swinging until the checkered flag. We got four opportunities we know we can win at and that's our mentality," Bubba Wallace added.
Bubba Wallace is frustrated with the idea of making the playoffs on points
Speaking ahead of the Chicago Street Race last month, Bubba Wallace said getting in on points isn't a route he prefers for the playoffs.
“I’ll be honest with you, I’m quite tired of having to do it on points. We always seem to find ourselves right around the bubble and it gets stressful. Every race that goes by and you don’t win, it gets more and more stressful,” Wallace said, as per RACER.
The 30-year-old added that despite the #23 team making it on points last season, he would rather have a win because after getting a win, one can "start doing crazy stuff" to experiment in the regular season. However, being in the situation that they are as a team, Wallace said he'll have to "play the game" and hoped to be in the right spot at the right time.
He added that the #23 team is "hyper-focused" on the task but can lose sight of the need to do the best they can and run well. Bubba Wallace said he fully believes in his team.
