After Kyle Larson dominantly won at Bristol, he invited his son, Owen, to be part of his victory celebration. The younger Larson, a racecar driver in his own right, hopped on the side of his father's car as the #5 Camaro lapped around the short track.
Following this celebration by Larson and his son, the Hendrick Motorsports driver was asked what such moments mean to him. Further, he was asked if celebrating with his son instills a sense of motivation and wanting to replicate his success in Owen.
Larson asked Owen, sitting beside him at the press conference, whether he finds watching his father win motivating. After a chuckle with his son, he elaborated on the question.
Larson said that while he loves having his family in attendance of his race wins, it's rare that he wins when his family is there. He said he planned to drive to his pit stall and celebrate with his team. But then he saw Owen celebrating on the pit road.
"I knew he went to the suite so I thought I’d meet him in Victory Lane or something by the time it took to get all the way down. When I saw him there, I said, cool, I’m going to stop right here and have him hop on and go slow so I don’t hopefully get in trouble. I’m hoping he will remember these moments for the rest of his life. Hopefully some day when he’s winning races and has a family of his own, he’ll get to find his own way to get to celebrate with his children," Kyle Larson said. [22:20]
While Larson has established himself as one of the best racecar drivers in the world today, his son is starting his racing career.
Owen Larson has already started his racing career on the lines of Kyle Larson
Owen Larson won his first Junior Sprint race at Coles County Speedway earlier this year. The junior Larson defended his position against a charging Levi Bollard in a 15-lap race. Following his win, a proud Kyle Larson congratulated his son on Instagram.
It's worth mentioning that Larson also began his racing career from the grassroots level in the dirt world. As a youngster, the 2021 Cup champion raced open-wheel cars, USAC midgets, and sprint cars. Only time will tell whether Owen will follow the same trajectory as his father to the NASCAR Cup Series.
