During a 2006 qualifying interview, Denny Hamlin was on the receiving end of a pie in the face when Kevin Harvick sneaked up on him to get a playful revenge. This brewed a classic rivalry between the two famed Cup Series drivers.
Seemingly, the 2014 Cup Series champion Harvick wanted to get revenge on Joe Gibbs Racing driver Hamlin for throwing pie in the former's face on the talk show, Live with Regis and Kelly. As a result, former NASCAR driver Harvick got his payback in a similar manner. Later on, Harvick jokingly said:
“It was worth it... He got me the other day on national TV, I didn’t say anything. He got me good. I had my ear open for like a day." [0:31]
Soon after the above conversation, the pie-faced Hamlin approached Harvick for a peaceful handshake.
Then the 2006 Cup Series Rookie of the Year Hamlin shared his perspective on the playful incident.
"I should've known it was coming but yeah, I got him on Regis and Kelly and he got me here," Hamlin said. [1:41]
He then continued the conversation when asked if he was even with Harvick.
"We're never even, you can forget it," added Hamlin.
Moreover, Hamlin shared the post back in 2020.
The former Stewart-Haas Racing driver Harvick hung up his helmet after claiming 60 Cup Series wins and a championship title. Moreover, the 48-year-old stands in 10th place in the all-time Cup Series win list.
On the other hand, the three-time Daytona 500 winner Hamlin has amassed 54 Cup wins in his two-decade-long career. He ranks 12th on the all-time wins list and has the most Cup Series wins without a championship title.
When Kevin Harvick chose Denny Hamlin in his fantasy NASCAR team
In an episode of Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour podcast in March 2024, Harvick revealed the four drivers he would have in his fantasy NASCAR Cup Series team.
Harvick chose 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin as his first driver for the team and said:
"If I'm going to build a four-car cup team, my guy that's going to help me build my team is Denny Hamlin. I know a lot of people boo Denny and don't like him and don't like the things that he says."
"And here's the bottom line. Denny Hamlin has switched on to our sport, works his butt off to be good at it. And he goes out, kicks a** on the racetrack. I like that." Harvick added.
After Hamlin, Harvick added the Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson for his speed and dynamic racing skills to the list. Harvick then chose the two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano to help with the development on the team. The fourth driver on his list was the 16-year-old Brent Crews, who competes in the CARS Late Model Stock Tour for Kevin Harvick Incorporated.
