Bubba Wallace was ready to shake Austin Dillon's hand and congratulate him on his win at Richmond, as the latter seemed poised to win before the caution came out with two laps to go. However, after watching the race end the way it did, Wallace changed his mind.

A tangle between JTG Daugherty Racing driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Ryan Preece of Stewart-Haas Racing brought out the only caution flag in the 400-lap race. Dillon would have perhaps sailed to a clear victory if that had not happened.

Following the caution, the lead lap drivers, including Dillon and Joey Logano, resorted to the pit road. Although Dillon was the first to exit the pit road, Logano managed to snatch the lead from him. Dillon then tailed Logano's bumper and spun him out.

Logano had to settle for a disappointing P19 finish. Discussing the incident with journalist Peter Stratta, the 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace said:

"Whatever it takes to win, I guess. We're in but hey, he deserved it fair and square. I was ready to man up and go shake his hand (and say), 'Congrats!' Can't do that now. That was kind of BS, so, it is what it is."

Wallace finished the race fourth and therefore in a stronger position to secure the second playoff appearance of his career. With only three races to go till the postseason, the fight for those last few berths might get even more intense in the weeks to come.

Bubba Wallace hints at a potential 'dog fight'

Bubba Wallace knows he has to focus on his own fight right now. As of today, the Alabama native is 14th on the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 545 points, just seven short of the provisional cutline. He said in the aforementioned conversation with Stratta:

"We gotta worry about our own races for the next three weeks. Proud of this team for fighting and executing all day. Wasn't our best day for sure but all in all, we ended up on the good side. Shows how tough the Cup Series is."

Trackhouse Racing's Ross Chastain finished fifth in Sunday's race, right behind Wallace. But on the standings, he is seven points ahead, currently holding the 16th and final playoff spot. Needless to say, snatching it away from the Chevy star is Wallace's priority now.

"Ross finished right up my bumper so it's gonna be a dog fight," he added.

Next week's race, the FireKeeper's Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on August 18, is a 200-lap event that will start at 2:30 p.m. ET and will air on the USA Network and NBC Sports. NASCAR fans can listen to live radio updates on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
