Kyle Larson, winner of Saturday's Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol, took to social media on Monday to express his opinion on a recent poll regarding the quality of the race. The 2021 Cup Series champion believes the results are heavily skewed based on the outcome of the 500-lap event.
Jeff Gluck, a motorsports insider who writes for The Athletic, traditionally posts a poll on his personal X account after Cup Series races asking fans whether they thought it was a good race or not.
On Monday, Gluck posted the results of the poll and stated only 27.2 percent of voters thought Saturday's race was good, adding that it's the lowest percentage of any previous Bristol polls. The insider also noted it placed 55th out of 56 short track races and last among the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet driver's 31 career wins.
The 32-year-old responded to the post to voice his displeasure. Larson, who led 462 of 500 laps on Saturday, insinuated that if the race saw two overtime restarts along with him losing after leading 400+ laps, fans would've voted the other way in favor of it being a good race. He added:
"Lead 450 laps but have 2 overtime restarts and lose and I guarantee the percentage is flip flopped. That’s our fan base."
The California native's post garnered well over 200 responses. Michael Waltrip, retired NASCAR driver and current NASCAR on FOX personality, commented suggesting it might not be the NASCAR fan base who's to blame, but rather the platform.
"That's the internet," he wrote.
Many fans clarified that their vote didn't have to do with Larson's dominant performance but was instead due to the racing that played out among everyone else, as many fans expressed disappointment in the cars being unable to pass on Saturday. One user said:
"Respectfully I disagree. My vote had nothing to do with your dominance, but rather everything to do with the racing throughout the field."
"The passing just wasn’t good, it has nothing to do with you," another fan wrote.
However, a few fans sided with the 31-time Cup Series winner, with one commenting:
"I loved the race. #TeamLarson."
"Don't worry about it, Kyle. Just keep up the good work and keep doing your thing," another user wrote.
Kyle Larson's Bristol win was historic
Kyle Larson wheeled his #5 HendrickCars.com machine to victory in dominant fashion at Bristol. He led all but 38 laps and his 462 laps led are the fourth-most for a single race in the track's history and the most since Cale Yarborough in 1977, who led 495 of 500 laps.
The win guaranteed Larson a spot in the Round of 12, which kicks off on Sunday at Kansas. He has five victories this season, which include wins at Las Vegas, Kansas, Sonoma, Indianapolis, and Bristol.
