The streak of disappointing results in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season continued for Kyle Busch. Sunday’s (June 23) rain-interrupted USA Today 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway didn’t go as well for Busch as he wanted. He came to the track to turn the fortunes in his favor after a rough stretch of races but added another setback.
In a bizarre wreck during the caution period, Busch lost control of his #8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet and hit the wall.
Early in Stage 3, Busch and other drivers were getting ready to resume racing in wet conditions, and it was like a switch flipped in Busch’s car as he ended up spinning after hitting the outside wall. The wreck ended his day with 83 laps to go.
After another DNF result at New Hampshire, Kyle Busch’s wife Samantha expressed her disappointment with a string of subpar finishes this season for Busch and his team on social media.
In an Instagram story, she wrote:
“What Italians do when they are stressed/upset. I just feel so awful for Kyle and the 8 team. It's been such a hard year for all of them and their an amazing group that has so much talent but the results aren't reflecting it. As a wife you want to make it all better but besides being supportive there's nothing you can do or say to make the bad finishes any different.”
With a result of P35 at New Hampshire, the two-time NASCAR Cup champion has an average finish of 26.5 in the last six races. He has finished P35 in three of the last four races. It would not be wrong to say he has been going through a bad phase of his Cup career.
Kyle Busch reflects on his unfortunate finish at New Hampshire
After the race, the 39-year-old veteran driver expressed his disappointment with how his outing ended at NHMS. He also mentioned that the team will evaluate to understand the incident better and make improvements to their setup in wet conditions.
On what went wrong under the caution during the post-race interview with NBC Sports, Kyle Busch said:
“We worked our way back into the lead lap and thought we could pick up a few more spots, but unfortunately we hit the wall under caution on wets just before coming back to green after the rain delay and weren’t able to finish. We’ll take the FICO Chevy back to the shop to evaluate what happened and how we can improve on our New Hampshire package.”
With back-to-back DNF results, Kyle Busch dropped to 17th place in the Cup Series points table with 385 points. He is 20 points below the playoff cut-off line to advance to the 16-driver playoff field. He is now in a must-win situation to qualify for the playoffs.
