Todd Gilliland opened up on the ongoing charter drama while outlining his secure future with Front Row Motorsports. The North Carolina-based outfit is among the two teams who declined to sign the charter extension. The other one is 23XI Racing.
After two years of negotiating the charter terms, NASCAR, according to The Athletic, gave an ultimatum to sign the extension by Friday midnight. The agreement will guarantee Cup teams' entry into each points-paying race from 2025 onwards through the 2031 season.
However, as FRM and 23XI Racing refused to ink the charter extension deal, they are supposedly at risk of losing their guarantees for the 2025 season. The chaotic affair won't affect Michael McDowell in the NASCAR community, as he has signed a multi-year deal with Spire Motorsports and will field the #71 Chevy next year.
However, if FRM loses its charter, McDowell's teammate Todd Gilliand's 2025 Cup Series season might suffer a blow, as the guaranteed entry into every points race and a share from the prize purse would be potentially revoked. Nonetheless, as Gilliland will remain with his present team for 2025 and beyond, he is unfazed by the charter negotiations.
While conversing with Frontstrech, the #38 Ford driver said.
"I don't know that there is much concern. I know what my future is, it's racing with Front Row Motorsports. Other than that, I'm not really too sure. I need to probably be more informed than I am right now honestly of all what's going on. But all that stuff is above my paygrade at the moment," Todd Gilliland said (1:12).
The #38 driver has collected four top-10s thus far in this season.
"I want to be at Front Row Motorsports": Todd Gilliland on inking a multi-year extension with FRM
Todd Gilliand's relationship with FRM dates back to his NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2022. He piloted the team's Ford during his rookie season but was demoted in the next season. Though Gilliland was slated to run a full-time schedule in 2023, he was replaced by Zane Smith for six races. The former secured a part-time deal with Rick Ware Racing the same year.
However, the current season witnessed the North Carolina native rekindle with FRM. Furthermore, on June 5, a few days before the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at the Sonoma Raceway, the team announced extending their relationship with Todd Gilliland.
“I want to be at Front Row Motorsports, and I want to be a part of what’s happening right now. This is the time to join as a partner, a fan, and watch our next chapter. It’s really cool to see it all happening, and I have to thank Bob Jenkins and Jerry Freeze for their commitment in taking the steps to make us a consistent winning and playoff organization. It’s never easy, but I feel confident in our direction. I’m excited to see what the future holds," Gilliland said on his contract extension via NASCAR.
Noah Gragson will join Todd Gilliland and replace Michael McDowell in the #34 Ford.
