In 2017, Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced that he'd be retiring from full-time racing after that season. However, Junior's racing days weren't completely behind him despite his retirement. He continued to take part in yearly races in the Xfinity Series with his own team, JR Motorsports.
In fact, since 2018, Dale Jr. has run at least one Xfinity race until the most recent season in 2024. He has eight starts since 2018, in which he has four finishes inside the top 5.
But interestingly, none of those eight starts came on superspeedways. This was something that Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, recently told NHRA racer Antron Brown upon one of his suggestions. Brown was the latest guest on the Dirty Mo Media podcast, and during his conversation with the other co-owner of JR Motorsports, the NHRA driver suggested:
"You need to talk to your brother. Tell him, I got him a seat. Let's go baby! Let's go!"
However, Kelley Earnhardt Miller didn't waste any time in shutting the door on Dale Jr. potentially driving in an NHRA event. She said:
"Oh gosh I don't know about that. You know, he doesn't race the superspeedways for a reason. I don't know if he's going to think about going straight or not."
Despite that, Antron Brown playfully suggested that if not Dale Earnhardt Jr., perhaps she can be the Earnhardt who tries her luck in NHRA for a short and sweet time.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has no plans of returning to NASCAR for the time being
Following his 7th place finish in the Bristol Xfinity race last year, Dale Earnhardt Jr. made it clear that he didn't have any plans at that moment of racing in NASCAR. Since his retirement in 2018, Earnhardt Jr. has raced at least once every year in the Xfinity Series.
However, after the 2024 start, Dale Jr. said that he had nothing scheduled for 2025 or beyond.
"I don’t have any plans. I like it that way. If I want to run one, I will. If I don’t, I won’t. Right now, there is nothing on the schedule for next year," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on his podcast.
In fact, Dale Earnhardt Jr. event went on to suggest that his Bristol start from 2024 was more or less his final Xfinity Series start. Having said that, he emphasized that if he feels like he's missing the action, he'd ring up his sister and see what's available on the schedule for 2026.
The NASCAR Hall of Famer, who will turn 51 this year, revealed that while he may not be racing in the Xfinity Series, his days as a racecar driver are far from over. Earnhardt said he intends to run his late-model car in the future.
