Shane van Gisbergen recently revealed how life has been for him since his switch from V8 Supercars to NASCAR. After his win at the inaugural Chicago Street course race, the New Zealander decided to pursue a path in NASCAR, with his schedule for 2024 being announced by Kaulig Racing and Trackhouse Racing at the end of last season.
This weekend, Gisbergen is heading into Chicago once again, a race which kick-started his foray into NASCAR.
And now, having more experience under his belt, Gisbergen was asked in a press-conference about whether he misses home and the differences he noticed first to what he notices now.
"I miss New Zealand a lot, for sure. But I love it here. I really enjoy racing. I love racing every week. I love having a routine and knowing what I’m doing pretty much every day until November.. that’s exciting. I have three weeks off in August and I have no idea what I’m going to do. It’s a weird feeling. I love this style of racing; the atmosphere, the people and the schedule. Yeah, I’m loving every moment. I definitely think I made the right choice. I feel like it’s a really cool place for me; being welcome by everyone, whether it’s team people, drivers and the fans," he described. [7:00]
SVG added that it's been "really cool" to see how welcoming everyone has been and he's really enjoying life in the USA and NASCAR.
It's worth mentioning that so far this season, Shane van Gisbergen has won twice in the Xfinity Series, with both wins coming back-to-back at Portland and Sonoma.
Shane van Gisbergen isn't putting pressure on himself to go back-to-back at Chicago
Unlike last year when he ran only the Cup race on Sunday, in 2024, Shane van Gisbergen is running the Xfinity as well as the Cup race on Chicago Street course.
And while he has gone back-to-back earlier this season, and expressed his desire to move to the Cup next season, SVG isn't putting pressure on himself of winning at all costs.
"It would probably certainly help; getting a good result both days and showing I can keep running up front on road courses. But I’m not trying to put pressure on myself, you know, saying ‘I have to win to get into Cup next year,’ you know? But certainly a good result will help that, yeah," he said as per AP News.
In fact, Shane van Gisbergen claimed that running a road course race is the equivalent of a holiday for him. He said it's because he can relax and have some fun.
But whether the Xfinity or the Cup race would be fun for SVG this weekend, that is something only time will tell.
