NASCAR fans speculated online after reports of a Joe Gibbs Racing engineer allegedly selling important information to a rival team emerged. According to reports, the engineer shared sensitive data about car setups and received cash in return from a team not competing in the playoffs.

The story broke on October 14 and NASCAR is reportedly aware of the allegations. According to reports, the organization refused to take action without a formal complaint from the teams involved.

Joe Gibbs still has two cars competing for this year’s Cup Series title and fans speculated about which team might have received the information.

Many fans think Richard Childress Racing (RCR), who had a tough season, might be the rival team involved in the scandal because of their recent improvement in performance. One fan wrote:

"To sell to a rival team and I’m hearing it’s RCR"
"My bet would be RCR since they went from both of there cars being in last place to top 5’s snap of a finger," another user wrote.
"I can't help but think back to RCR going from being completely uncompetitive to winning a race in 2 weeks. Hmmmm," another opined.

Others believe Legacy Motor Club might be the team involved since they switched to Toyota this year while some were sarcastic about the situation.

"Legacy getting desperate," one user wrote.
"How long before the FBI pays a visit around Charlotte?" another joked.
"Let me guess, it was someone from 23XI or Front Row," a fan commented.

However, non-playoff teams that could have stolen the information include Kaulig Racing, Legacy Motor Club, Richard Childress Racing, Rick Ware Racing, and Spire Motorsports.

"Questionable where they got all that speed" - Joe Gibbs' driver raises suspicion

Ty Gibbs, the No. 54 Toyota Camry driver for Joe Gibbs, also questioned RCR’s sudden speed and found it odd that they got fast so quickly. After Austin Dillon won the race at Richmond in August but also wrecked Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin on the last lap, Gibbs responded to the situation.

He said (via NASCAR Corner):

"But, definitely questionable where they [RCR] got all that speed from as well, right? I mean, they haven’t been running good at all, now, all the sudden, they are super fast. So, definitely curious on that."

Dillon later received a 25-point penalty but the team kept the win. However, it took away their chance to compete in the playoffs.
