Shane van Gisbergen talked about self-criticism after losing the lead to Chris Buescher on the final lap at Watkins Glen. During a post-race interview, van Gisbergen expressed how angry he was at himself for a driver error that cost him the race win.

Driving part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, Shane van Gisbergen is the pilot for the No. 97 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet Camaro at the Xfinity Series. He was tapped to join the Go Bowling at The Glen race and finished in P2 in the overtime period.

Van Gisbergen admitted he had a driver error entering the bus stop when his No. 16 Chevrolet clipped the wall and lost a bit of ground.

“Driver error, yeah. I knew Chris was really [going to] send it and push me if he could get there and as I turned in and got a little bit loose and clipped the inside wall and just driver error. I’m gutted,” said van Gisbergen.

The 35-year-old driver may be angry at himself, but he still enjoyed the road course showdown in upstate New York.

“The race was awesome with Ross and Chris and the others in the end. I’m gutted we couldn’t get it but I had a lot of fun, but I’m pretty angry at myself,” van Gisbergen added.

Shane van Gisbergen took the lead from Chris Buescher on the first of two laps of the overtime period. Due to his driver error, Buescher was able to get close to van Gisbergen enough for a bump before passing him on the final lap.

The No. 16 car pushed hard to try to get the lead back, but it got loose, thus Buescher extended his gap and brought it home for RFK Racing.

The New Zealand native bested Carson Hocevar in P3 and Ross Chastain in P4. The latter took pole on Saturday’s qualifying and led 51 laps around the road course.

The top 10 finishers are completed by Zane Smith, Chase Briscoe, Michael McDowell, Corey LaJoie, Ryan Preece, and Austin Cindric, respectively.

Shane van Gisbergen will join the NASCAR Cup Series full-time next season with Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez at Trackhouse Racing.

Chris Buescher celebrates the victory after passing Shane van Gisbergen at Watkins Glen

Chris Buescher secured his first win of the season after taking the lead from Shane van Gisbergen at Watkins Glen. When Buescher reflected on the race, the No. 17 Ford Mustang driver said he saw the No. 16 making an error before pushing to victory.

“I thought we lost it there, the last one and just to stay right there with him [Shane Van Gisbergen] that was a spot that was better than us, and he missed it. So I tried to cross over and would cut and just hard racing there, but just an awesome finish,” Buescher said.

The 31-year-old American driver continued by saying:

“To get a win, it’s good. We came here to be spoiler. We’re gonna do that.”

The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs will return at Bristol Motor Speedway next week, where four playoff drivers will be eliminated from contention.
