NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson will continue competing in select races for his team Legacy Motor Club (LMC) in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. During this past weekend at the Phoenix Championship race, Johnson confirmed his return and set clear expectations for next season.
Jimmie Johnson, one of NASCAR’s most accomplished drivers, retired as a full-time driver from the sport after the 2020 season. After two years, he returned as a part-time driver and made four appearances behind the wheel of #84 LMC, the team he co-owns with Maury Gallagher. He also made nine starts this season with LMC, including the season-opening race at Daytona and the Race at Phoenix.
Speaking about his 2025 plans, Jimmie Johnson told Jayski that he'll be focused on delivering consistent performance rather than just being on the track.
Reflecting on the practical and goal-focused approach to his 2025 return with LMC as driver/co-owner, Johnson said:
“I’m a result-oriented guy. It’s hard not to have that weigh on you at times. Picking a goal, having a reason and a purpose for why we’re running a third car is very helpful.”
Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion also shed light on the challenges of being a racing part-time driver/team owner and how the sport has changed since he retired from full-time racing.
Johnson said:
“One, the sport is different. Two, it’s not my full-time job. I walked into these gates for decades knowing I had my stuff in order and was brought up in a system where preparation equals confidence. I can’t prep today like I used to prep when I was a full-time driver. Plus, not being a full-time driver, there are a lot of unknowns and details to get these cars around track.”
Jimmie Johnson explains his plans for 2025 NASCAR season with LMC
Former NASCAR champion explained his 2025 plans with LMC, which involve carefully balancing his part-time schedule in the #84 car without detracting from the development and performance of their full-time cars: #42 and #43. John Hunter Nemechek drives the #42 entry while Erik Jones operates the #43 entry.
On his 2025 plans, here’s what Johnson said (via Jayski):
“For 2025, we will make sure we use the #84 car in the right capacity and in the right way so it doesn’t take anything away from the #42 or the #43. We will see how many times Jacob [Canter, director of competition at Legacy Motor Club] lets me go out and drive.”
Jimmie Johnson has competed in 12 races since the 2023 season. His P26 finish in the past weekend's title-deciding race at Phoenix was his best finish since retiring from full-time racing in 2020.
