Kyle Larson had a standout 2024 season in the NASCAR Cup Series, piloting the #5 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. With six wins and 15 top-five finishes, Larson showcased his talent and consistency. However, despite his strong performances, his playoff run was cut short following the conclusion of Round of 8.
"The format devalues the championship": Kyle Larson opens up on being the most dominant NASCAR driver last season
Joey Logano’s 2024 Cup Series championship win has been overshadowed by criticism of his season’s statistics, notably his unprecedented average finish of 17.1, the lowest for a NASCAR champion. This disparity has sparked renewed debates about the playoff format, with drivers like Kyle Larson, who outperformed Logano in season-long metrics, raising questions about the validity of crowning a champion based on the playoffs alone.
In a recent interview ahead of the 2025 Cup Series campaign, Larson reflected on his performance while outlining the reason behind his titleless season. He said (via Hendrick Motorsports):
"If anything, I just think the format in a way devalues a championship. Especially in the Next-Gen era. So, I think obviously you'd like to win the most races and win the championship and all that, but I think winning six races, that's extremely tough to do, and we were a factor in many more than that."
"So, I'm proud of the season, proud of the effort from the team, and looking forward to next year too. We'll hopefully start off strong and carry it on through the playoffs like we did this year," Kyle Larson added.
The NASCAR Cup Series will return for the 2025 season-opener at Daytona International Speedway with the prestigious Daytona 500 on February 16 at 2:30 PM Eastern time.
