Denny Hamlin recently addressed whether Kyle Busch's long winning streak will end soon. The former JGR driver has won a NASCAR Cup race in the last 19 seasons. Winning another race this year would extend his record to two decades. However, his former teammate believes that on outright speed, Busch may not win a race this year.
Speaking on Actions Detrimental recently, Hamlin discussed Busch potentially winning a race this season and the special circumstances under which such a possibility may be realized.
"I feel as though they're definitly running better than they were when we talked about it earlier in the season. As far as winning on just speed, going out there and leading 200+ laps? No, I do not see that happening but he could win through sequences like we saw this weekend where they're running pretty good and then all of a sudden, the field splits on strategy, and he's on the right strategy," Denny Hamlin said. "So I think that certainly what's most likely is that the streak is over but I wouldn't count him out just because I just think he's capable enough of a driver, we know that."
Hamlin emphasized that neither he nor anyone else is questioning whether Busch still has it. He added that only Busch may sometimes question his abilities instead of someone else.
"I just think while they're gaining on the speed they need to compete, I don't think it's happening often enough."
In the most recent race at Kansas, Busch squandered up a chance to win his first race of the season.
Denny Hamlin comments on Kyle Busch's incident with Chase Briscoe at Kansas
RCR driver Kyle Busch, in an attempt to pass Chase Briscoe, who was trying to get on the lead lap, ended up spinning out and conceding his lead. As per Denny Hamlin on Actions Detrimental, this incident was mostly because of Busch's own doing.
"He put himself in a really really bad aero-spot, a narrow spot that I found out at Michigan. Just when you get to the right side of someone's right rear quarter panel and then you get close to the wall, it just takes all your downforce away," Denny Hamlin said. [34:05]
"And then you spin out. It's just like a pocket of air that's just, your car just lifts up and takes off. And so I think he just put himself in a really really bad spot by just trying to stick it in there."
The JGR veteran further claimed he understands why Busch might have decided to go for that move on Briscoe. In Hamlin's opinion, the two-time Cup champion didn't want to be held up any longer than necessary by Briscoe because Ross Chastain was making gains from second place.
Because of this sense of urgency, Busch moved to get to clean air, hoping to regain his pace. However, given that it was a risky move, it went wrong and didn't pay off for the #8 driver.
