Kenny Wallace made a pointed remark relating to Joey Logano after the Cup Series driver finished eighth in the Xfinity Series race on Saturday. Logano was driving Hailie Deegan's AM Racing Ford in The Loop 110 race in Chicago.
NASCAR returned to Chicago for the annual Chicago Street Race where 38 drivers took part in the 18th race of the season. The race, which saw nine lead changes in one hour 56 minutes 45 seconds, had Shane van Gisbergen as the ultimate race winner.
Van Gisbergen, the street race expert, won The Loop 110 ahead of Ty Gibbs and Kyle Larson. Parker Kligerman and Jesse Love finished in fourth and fifth, leaving Logano to settle for eighth. Championship leader Cole Custer came home in 18th place.
Reacting to Logano's race finish, Wallace, a former NASCAR driver, shared his thoughts on X. He wrote:
"I am SHOCKED that @HailieDeegan is not better than the 2 time @NASCAR Champion @joeylogano. 3 laughs for Earnhardt."
Logano was allowed to drive in Deegan's Ford, but his race weekend did not start smoothly. The Team Penske Cup Series driver qualified 15th ahead of Alex Labbe and behind Sammy Smith. Van Gisbergen took the pole position.
Coming into the race, Joey Logano managed eighth with his #15 Ford. He finished behind Austin Hill and held off Justin Allgaier (ninth) and Austin Green (tenth).
Joey Logano reveals how his AM Racing chance came about
Earlier this week, AM Racing decided to replace Hailie Deegan with Joey Logano after the latter's Ally 400 win at Nashville Superspeedway. This came as a bit of a surprise as Logano's last Xfinity Series appearance was in 2019 at the Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Explaining the switch, Logano said to Dale Earnhardt Jr. as per Dirty Mo Media:
"They called me last week and said, 'Hey, you know we got the seat here for 15 that seems like to open up and do you want to drive it?' I thought, 'Well, let me clear with my boss, Roger, to make sure that's okay and there's no sponsor conflicts written like that, right?'. And once I had all that clear, it just seemed to make sense."
Joey Logano is all set to race at Chicago Street Race in the Grant Park 165 on Sunday. He qualified in 32nd place, ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and behind Harrison Burton. Championship leader Kyle Larson took the pole position.
