Kevin Harvick addressed the controversy surrounding Chase Briscoe after he posted a photo wearing a T-shirt with the Toyota logo. He was recently announced as Martin Truex Jr.'s replacement in the team in 2025.
After being signed by Joe Gibbs Racing for 2025, Briscoe posted a picture on social media wearing a T-shirt from his future team. It had a prominent Bass Pro Shops logo — his future sponsors — but interestingly, there was also a Toyota logo on the top right.
Chase Briscoe will be driving a Toyota for the next season, but currently, he still has to drive the #14 Ford with Stewart-Haas Racing. Talking about this issue on his namesake podcast, Kevin Harvick stated that it was a "major fail" from Briscoe's side. He then added the example of when SHR signed Josh Berry and how that process worked out.
"I think it's a major fail on Chase's part to have that Toyota logo on during the gear," Harvick said (at 0:40).
"I know when we announced Josh Berry's stuff that he was coming to Stuart Haas, it was definitely... We made a point to make sure that he had a Stuart Haas logo and that was it and worked with Junior Motorsports to make sure that they were okay with everything that was happening. Now it's a little bit different situation with him leaving a team that's closing, but I still think that you don't want the Edsel Ford's of the world mad at you," he added.
"In these situations, people can be frustrated" - Kevin Harvick reasons Chase Briscoe's "mistake" of wearing Toyota T-shirt
Chase Briscoe is currently in his fourth Cup Series season. He has driven for Stewart-Haas Racing all his career in the championship with the highest finish at ninth place in 2022.
However, the team earlier announced their decision to cease the Cup Series operations at the end of this season, which came as a surprise to the drivers.
Briscoe, who still has over 15 rounds of this season to finish in the #14 Ford, wore the Toyota T-shirt, which Kevin Harvick labeled a "mistake." However, he explained that people in these situations can be "frustrated."
Kevin Harvick said on the aforementioned podcast (at 1:20):
"I know in these situations that people can be frustrated and they can be at a point where they're not happy and you get super excited about what you're doing next."
"But I think it's definitely a mistake by having that Toyota logo on before the season ended because of the fact that he still is a Ford driver, still on a Ford team. And I think there were definitely some things that were missed on Chase Briscoe's part in doing that and having that logo on his shirt," he added.
