NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time Cup Series champion, clinched a victory at the Goodwood Revival in England this past Saturday.
The prestigious event featured popular racers competing in vintage cars in West Sussex. Johnson won the Stirling Moss Trophy alongside four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti, piloting a classic 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT Lightweight.
The 48-year-old started in 9th place but quickly moved up to take the lead by the second corner, eventually winning the race. Johnson was thrilled with his achievement after the race and called it a dream come true.
"This is very special...This is great. What an honor. This has just been an event that I don’t wanna miss. I have always dreamed of coming here and competing," he said.
Johnson also thanked his team for fixing his car that got damaged during the rehearsals.
"My time in the States was quite busy, and I was finally able to come in '22, and it is such an incredible race. Big thanks and credit to this team. I kind of scratched the back of it yesterday in the rain, and they've been able to fix the car and get it back on track. Of course, Dario—it's just been such a long-time close friend, and to be able to share a car with him and to share a win together—it's gonna be a fun night," he added.
During practice, Johnson crashed into the barriers on a wet track, drawing criticism from some fans for damaging the historic car. However, his team quickly repaired the vehicle, and Johnson made a strong comeback to secure the victory.
Jimmie Johnson's Goodwood win with Franchitti
The 26th Goodwood Revival is currently underway, taking place from September 6 to 8 this year. The event kicked off with a tribute air show. On Saturday, the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy race featured a lineup of motorsport legends.
Jimmie Johnson and Dario Franchitti started in ninth place. Johnson had an impressive first lap, taking the lead as they crossed the finish line. He seemed poised for an easy victory until a safety car was deployed, bringing all the drivers close. Although Franchitti rebuilt their lead after a pit stop, they were issued a 10-second penalty. Despite the penalty, they managed to secure the win.
The AC Cobra team of Greensall and Spiers finished second, while Jordan and Hartley Jr. took third place.
