Former NASCAR driver Mike Skinner’s wife Angela Skinner invited JR Motorsports CEO Kelley Earnhardt Miller to the latest episode of the Skinner Round-Up show on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. About 30 minutes in, Skinner recalled a hotel room conversation with her husband that involved the veteran racer pursuing her to make a major life decision.

Angela Skinner, also known as Angie Skinner, has spent decades working in the NASCAR industry. Be it negotiating radio contracts, writing books on NASCAR, or organizing charity events, Skinner displays unmatched professional fervor in whatever she does. Bringing NASCAR to CBS Radio was one of her milestone achievements in her career, which ultimately led her to meet her husband.

Angie also served as the VP of Business Operations at Mike Skinner Enterprises. But back when she used to travel every weekend to the racetracks, her husband would sometimes get a bit jealous of other men staring at his wife.

One time, when they were in New Hampshire, Mike Skinner finally spilled it out. He sat with Angie and said that he wanted her to quit her job. Angie recalled,

“I remember we were sitting in the hotel room and he's like I really want you to quit this job. I'm not comfortable with you traveling alone on weekends. I see the way guys look at you and he was saying all these things and I go...I think I started crying. But I had to stand up for myself and I think that's important for not just women.” (32:40)

In 2011, Angie joined SiriusXM NASCAR Radio as the co-host of Sirius Speedway and soon landed her current role in the Skinner Round-Up show. In 2023, she joined Speed Sport as its Director of Sales. Besides that, Angie works as a voice actor with Skinner 5 Media and also runs her own branding and event management company called Accelerated Communications Solutions.

Angie reveals how Dale Earnhardt Jr. was involved in Mike Skinner’s retirement

Mike Skinner competed in NASCAR between 1986 and 2012. He won the 1995 Truck Series championship and 28 races in what was known as the SuperTruck Series back then. However, he couldn't run consistently inside the top 5 or the top 10 during the closing years of his career.

Mike Skinner knew it was time to throw in the towel. As quoted in a 2022 story by Forbes, Mike said,

“Actually, I don't want to say I had a big ego…what happened to me is, I was a baby. I got tired of riding in the back and the rides I was getting then were good paying jobs, but they were back markers… I just decided that I just, I didn't want to race no more unless I had a chance to run in the top five or 10 anyway.”

But how did Dale Earnhardt Jr. play a role in all of this?

The NASCAR Hall of Famer received two concussions, one during a tire test at Kansas and another during a race at Talladega. To ensure a speedy recovery, Dale Jr. sat out of two races. As pointed out by Angie, this led Skinner to conclude that he was done racing.

Unlike Skinner, Earnhardt Jr. has been racing every year under the banner of JR Motorsports. This season, he finished 7th at Bristol Motor Speedway and most recently, took part in the South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway, where he ended up 28th due to a failed engine.
