The NASCAR Cup Series is heading towards Dover Motor Speedway this coming Sunday for the Wurth 400 as the 11th race of the season. This one-mile oval track will witness NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson's third start this season, who competes part-time for Legacy Motor Club.
However, expectations of Johnson winning this Sunday are slim. He competed in the opening race at the Daytona 500 and finished 28th. He then finished in 29th place at Texas Motor Speedway.
NASCAR fans took to social media to convey their thoughts regarding the NASCAR legend's third start. Many fans were left divided upon his return to Dover.
A fan on X (formerly Twitter) stated:
"I absolutely love you Jimmie… but I think you should lower your expectations juuuuuuust a bit"
"We love you Jimmie but the legacy cars suck we know you have the money to hire the best people look at trackhouse and 23XI if you want to succeed to have to spend some money or you’ll have a back of the pack team forever," said another fan.
"Incoming 28th place finish," said another user.
Fans in favor of him returning and dominating are quite pleased with the announcement.
"I remember being so confident when you went to Dover I would literally mark one of the Dover races as a win before yall even got there. I always felt like you’d at least win one of them every year," tweeted a fan.
Another fan tweeted, "Go JJ!!!! Excited to watch!!"
"Good Luck Jimmie. What u r doing w/ that program takes guts, determination & dedication. U have all that. It takes time. People expect U 2 win overnight. With mega teams & unlimited budgets that’s tough. Erik was up front… until… u r getting there! Hang in! U will get there!" another fan chimed in.
Jimmie Johnson's track record at Dover Motor Speedway
Seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson will start his third race of the 2024 NASCAR season at "The Monster Mile".
He is the only driver to tame the high-banked oval track with 11 wins, which is the highest at Dover Motor Speedway in NASCAR's history. Johnson's last win there came in 2017. The #84 Toyota driver has three top-eight finishes at Dover in 2019-20, which includes a third-place finish.
With 83 career wins to his name, the last being in 2017 at Dover, he will be the only non-charter car on the entry list at the Wurth 400 this Sunday.
