NASCAR insider Jenna Fryer has dropped a potential update on NASCAR and IndyCar's decision to race at the F1 Grand Prix's Mexican track, the Autodromos Hermanos Rodriguez, for the upcoming seasons. She shared a series of posts on her X account sharing speculation about a possible IndyCar Series race in the 2026 season with motorsports fans.
McLaren IndyCar Series driver Pato O'Ward participated in the one-hour practice ahead of the F1 Mexican Grand Prix on October 28, 2024. The only Mexican driver in F1, Sergio Pérez, supported McLaren's young driver during his practice session.
Fryer shared some clips of fans waiting for O'Ward at the track, and he autographed some of the posters there, expressing gratitude for his fans. Fryer shared the moment on X and wrote:
"Mexico City promoters note that #NASCAR opps has been on site of the #F1 race to prep for next year, and, "We have set up conversations within #IndyCar for January to think about 2026 and Pato is a big factor in all of that."
O'Ward has earlier expressed his wish to race IndyCars in his hometown. Unlike the Association, IndyCar Series tracks are spread across five countries, the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, and Brazil.
NASCAR announced going international after more than a decade in August
NASCAR announced its return to the Mexican track Autodromos Hermanos Rodriguez for the 2025 season in August 2024. It will be its first modern-era point-paying race to be held internationally since 1958, when a Cup Series race was held in Toronto, Canada. The Xfinity Series included the Mexican track from 2005 to 2008.
The Association's Vice President Ben Kennedy said (via Planet F1 and SI):
"This is a historic moment for our sport, and specifically for the Cup Series, in being able to expand our footprint to Mexico. We’ve been talking about the continued iteration of our schedule, right? You can go back a few years, went to new markets like Nashville and Austin, Texas. We went to the Coliseum for the Clash.
We went to our first street race in downtown Chicago, and this is going to be another first for us in a lot of ways. This is going to be certainly a monumental event for us, the first time we’re going south of the border.”
NASCAR will hold its Xfinity Series race at Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course on June 14, 2025.
